10 easy drone moves to help you shoot like a pro

The proliferation of <250g drones from manufacturers like DJI, Autel and others has caused a lot of people to take up the hobby. Whether they want to shoot photos or video, the tech available on the newest tiny drones allows us to shoot things that wouldn’t really have been possible just five or so years ago. And if you’re new to drones, it can be difficult to know where to begin and what to try.

In this video, YouTuber Mattheww Brennan shares 10 of his top drone moves using one particular feature of the DJI Mini 3 Pro, and that’s the “Spotlight” mode. This is a tracking mode that allows you to draw a box around a subject, and then as you fly the drone, the camera automatically keeps track of that subject.

The new DJI Mini 3 drone sacrifices obstacle avoidance for a $260 price drop vs the Mini 3 Pro

DJI has announced the new DJI Mini 3 drone. You might be feeling a little deja vu, like DJI already announced this, but no. This is a cut-down version of the DJI Mini 3 Pro, released back in May 2022. What makes the new DJI Mini 3 non-Pro different? Well, essentially, it’s the lack of obstacle avoidance.

It might seem silly to remove the feature that beginners arguably need the most in a drone specifically targeted towards beginners. But this loss of obstacle avoidance does come with a very significant drop in cost, too, with the basic RC-N1 controller package starting at $559 instead of the $759 for the same package with the Mini 3 Pro.

First images leak of upcoming non-Pro DJI Mini 3 drone show no obstacle avoidance sensors

Just over a week ago, word came that DJI had registered an upcoming cut-down DJI Mini 3 non-Pro version with the FCC. Now, we’re getting our first proper look at the drone according to reliable DJI leaker, DealsDrone, on Twitter.

From looking at the images, the design looks like a bit of a cross between the DJI Mini 2 and the more recent DJI Mini 3 Pro. But it’s pretty clear that the obstacle avoidance sensors are gone, bringing it more in line with the Mini 2, but with the Mini 2 and Mini 3 Pro having similar capabilities already, aside from the obstacle avoidance, how is this not just a slightly redesigned Mini 2?

A non-pro version of the DJI Mini 3 has shown up in the FCC database

It looks like there might be a lower-level DJI Mini 3 coming as a new listing for a non-pro model has shown up in the FCC database. Exactly what compromises might be made compared to the DJI Mini 3 Pro announced in May are unknown. But it’s not outside the realm of possibility, especially with the recent release of the cut-down DJI Mavic 3 Classic just three weeks ago.

According to DroneDJ, there isn’t a lot of information in the filing. It does mention that the DJI Mini 3 will be powered by a 2S 7.38v battery, although the capacity is not mentioned. We don’t know what the camera will be like, either. Will the non-Pro mini even carry the obstacle avoidance that brought DJI back in line with the likes of the Autel Evo Nano (review here)? Only time will really tell.

At some point, everybody who’s flown a drone was a beginner. And beginners are picking up a drone for the first time every single day. Maybe you’ve just got your first. Maybe it’s the DJI Mini 3 Pro featured in these videos from Jeven Dovey and Jake Sloan where they go through thirty of the biggest mistakes drone pilots make – particularly new ones – when it comes to getting into the air for the first time.

Even if you’ve been at it for a little while, there are still mistakes you’re probably making when it comes to flying your drone. In a list this big, it’s almost a certainty and I’m definitely guilty of a couple of them myself. The 30 tips are split up across the two videos from Deven and Jake, so be sure to watch both to make sure you don’t miss anything. You might not even realise you’re doing some of this!

DJI has now officially announced the DJI Mini 3 <250g drone with 3-way obstacle avoidance

DJI has now officially announced the successor to their <250g DJI Mini 2. And in what will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, it’s called the DJI Mini 3… Pro. I’m not sure what makes this “Pro” or if there’ll be a non-pro version coming at some point (perhaps as a successor to the Mini SE?), but DJI’s announcement today doesn’t actually reveal much that hadn’t already been leaked over the last couple of weeks – including a complete unboxing and first flight.

It’s another <250g drone with a larger battery option for those with the appropriate permits to fly larger drones, it comes in three different packages and the Fly More Combo deal is an extra addon to each of those three packages. And despite any other advancements DJI may have made with this drone, the big news, obviously, is that their Mini line finally has obstacle avoidance.

YouTuber posts complete DJI Mini 3 Pro unboxing and first flight videos days before official announcement

I think somebody’s probably going to get into trouble over this for breaking an embargo, but a YouTuber by the name of DM Productions has posted a complete unboxing video of the DJI Mini 3 Pro as well as a first flight and first impressions of the drone in use. The DJI Mini 3 Pro has been rumoured for quite a while with DJI finally posting a cryptic teaser on their website on Thursday.

The official announcement is expected on Tuesday, May 10th but it looks like somebody jumped the gun a little early so that they could get all of the YouTube traffic before all of the other websites and YouTubers who are sticking to the embargoes and NDAs they agreed to. I expect they’re all going to be a little pissed off right now.

There’s supposed to be a teaser announced later today and the official announcement is expected on May 10th, but the complete specs for DJI’s upcoming Mini 3 Pro drone have leaked, confirming that it has a 48-megapixel 1/1.3″ CMOS sensor capable of shooting 4K HDR video. It has a top speed of 34 minutes (on the standard battery) with level five wind resistance.

It has a top flight speed of 16 metres per second (~35.8mph) and a maximum flying height of 4,000 metres (~13,100 feet) and a maximum flight distance of 18km. Of course, that maximum height and distance are still governed by your local regulations. The leak, not surprisingly, comes via Jasper Ellens (otherwise known as 27 Leaks) who’s leaked much of the Mini 3 Pro information so far.

Product photos and prices leak for complete DJI Mini 3 Pro package options

So, it looks like there will be three different DJI Mini 3 Pro packages when DJI makes the official announcement, which now seems to be rumoured for May 10th – it was previously rumoured to come yesterday. And after seeing one DJI Mini 3 Pro package leaked by a Dutch retailer, more images have been leaked showing that there will be three different packages available along with their European prices.

The new images come via Jasper Ellens, who’s been one of the major sources of DJI Mini 3 Pro leaks and show off the drone in great detail along with exactly what’s included in each of the three package options. You’ll be able to buy the drone alone – presumably, for just smartphone control – or with the RC-N1 Smart controller or using the full DJI RC Remote Controller with a built-in display.

Dutch retailer leaks DJI Mini 3 Pro details – 4K60p, 3-way obstacle avoidance and up to 47 min flight time

DJI hasn’t officially said a thing about the DJI Mini 3 Pro yet, but Dutch retailer TopRC seems to have jumped the gun a little early, sending a listing live and possibly confirming the rumoured announcement date. If not the specific date, a screw-up like this usually does indicate that an official announcement is imminent. So, it’s going to be soon. But in the listing, they put the complete specs and even listed a price.

The listing, as spotted by DroneDJ, has since been redacted, although it still pops up in search results. Clicking it in the search results just takes you to the page showing all DJI products that they stock although Google still has the page cached. Regardless, we have the complete description of the drone now and its capabilities – and it appears it does have rear collision avoidance, after all.
