DJI RS3 mini review – Small but mighty

DJI RS3 mini review title

I have used the DJI RS3 on a few shoots. It is, by far, the most convenient, feature-rich, and intuitive gimbal I’ve ever used. So when DJI announced that they are coming out with a small, more budget-friendly ($359.00) version, I got excited. The DJI RS3 mini gimbal is, as expected, not a robust tool like its big brothers, but I found it to be useful in quite a bit of situations.

I am going to share my impressions below and would love to hear if you will opt for the DJI RS3 mini, or the DJI RS3 when you get a gimbal.

DJI’s RS 3 Mini shrinks their flagship gimbal down to travel size with a 2kg load capacity

DJI has announced their newest gimbal, the DJI RS 3 Mini, a small, lightweight handheld gimbal designed for travel use. DJI says that the RS 3 Mini “continues the excellent stabilization performance of the RS 3 series, allowing users to create professional-grade content while travelling around landscapes or in urban locations”. With a weight of less than 800g, it’s significantly lighter than the RS 3’s 1.3kg or the RS 3 Pro’s 1.5kg.

Despite being lighter weight, the DJI RS 3 Mini can still carry a payload of up to 2kg and features Bluetooth shutter control with DJI’s 3rd-generation stabilisation algorithms. It also offers easy switching between horizontal and vertical formats, depending on whether you’re shooting for YouTube vs TikTok and sports a 1.4″ colour touchscreen display.

DJI’s LiDAR module gives you autofocus even with f/0.95 manual focus lenses

One of the biggest problems I hear people talking about when it comes to gimbals it the lack of autofocus. In an ideal world, we’d either be able to hold the gimbal with one hand and easily move the focus wheel manually with the other or we’d just have a separate focus puller to deal with it for us so we can concentrate on the composition. But it’s rarely that easy for most of us.

It would be great if camera autofocus was perfect, but it isn’t. DJI’s is about to release a LiDAR sensor module to go with their new RS2 gimbal, which sits on top of your camera and talks to the RS2’s focus motor to let you get autofocus on your gimbal with just about anything. MAKE.ART.NOW’s Josh Yeo took it for a spin with the Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 III.

DJI’s new Ronin-SC is a lightweight one-handed gimbal for mirrorless cameras

The Gimbal Wars – we can call it that, right? – have been hotting up over the last few years with the likes of DJI, Zhiyun, Moza and others all competing for your gimbal dollars. There seems to be a constant struggle between them over load capacity, responsiveness, smoothness of motion, camera connectivity, mobile control and a bunch of other factors.

But probably the biggest complaint with the DJI Ronin-S was that of weight. It’s a hefty beast. Well now, DJI has announced the new DJI Ronin-SC motorised 3-axis gimbal designed specifically for use with mirrorless cameras, weighing in at only 1.1kg (2.4lbs – 41% lighter than the Ronin-S) and can be taken apart for easy storing in your backpack.[Read More…]

It looks like DJI are getting ready to announce a new DSLR/Mirrorless gimbal tomorrow

The DJI Ronin-S has been a very popular gimbal ever since it was first released. But one of the biggest complaints against it is its weight. After trying the Ronin-S side-by-side with my Zhiyun Crane 2, I can certainly sympathise with those complaints. But it looks like DJI might be getting ready to announce a newer, lighter gimbal for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.

The teaser image at the top of this page was posted to the DJI website with a link to sign up for notifications. It obviously shows a gimbal with a DSLR mounted on it and the claim “Lighter and Smarter than Ever?”. A short teaser video was also posted by DJI to Twitter.

The DJI Osmo Pocket goes up against the Hero 7 Black in these side-by-side comparisons

When the GoPro Hero 7 Black was announced it was lauded as the “Gimbal killer” with some pretty amazing built-in image stabilisation. It’s even convinced a few people to finally upgrade from their GoPro Hero 4. But has DJI just announced a “GoPro killer”?

DJI recently announced the new DJI Osmo Pocket. A teeny tiny gimbal that seems to easily match the Hero 7 on specs, but features a true mechanical built-in gimbal rather than electronic image stabilisation. Dave Altizer at Kinotika took the two out for a spin to see how they compare.

You might think that it looks like DJI just announced what is essentially their Mavic gimbal on a stick. And you’d be right, it does look a bit like that. But there’s a bit more to it than that. Yes, it’s a tiny 3-axis motorised gimbal, but this is no ordinary stick. This is the new DJI Osmo Pocket. A teeny tiny handheld 3-axis gimbal that shoots 4K 60fps video.
