Six years ago we set out a lofty goal, put a ring flash in the hands of every hot-shoe-strobe photographer in the world. This is why we made the best DIY ring flash in existence and sold it for a low price of $25 ($35 with a flash bracket).

Alas, all good things must end, and once the current batch of rings lights runs out, we will not make another. On the other hand, I see that many photographers still do not have a ring flash. This is your opportunity to score a ring flash for $10 only.

Make a Square DIY Ring Light for Under $10

I got the inspiration for the square ring light from a trip to Vegas. The hotel bathroom had a light that ran the perimeter of the giant rectangle mirror. I noticed the square ring catchlight in my eye and found it really interesting and wanted to reproduce this. A dozen (ok, maybe 2-3) different ideas ran through my head on how to build something the square ring light. I settled on good ole fashioned Foamcore for the test run.

Square and Ring? I know, it’s not exactly the best term for it, but I couldn’t think of what else to call it. So here it is, the Square Ring Light.

How To Build A Square Ring Light for Less Than $10

I know that Square Ring Flash is kind of an oxymoron, I mean how can it be both square and ring shaped. Well if they can do it in boxing, we can do it in photography. Making a square ring light is significantly easier than making a circled ring light, as strait lines as easier to handle. So easy in fact that you can be done with a ring light in half an hour and $10 as Isiah Xiong demostrates.

Fall is in the air again, which means– among other things– that I’m back in the classroom, teaching my digital photography class for kids. I have some great students this year, ranging in age from 10-14, who have already impressed me with their curiosity, talent, and desire to learn. One of the things that separates my class from other photography classes is that I don’t require my students to have a particular level of camera. As a result, I have students with DSLRs working side-by-side with students who photograph with the most basic of point-and-shoot models. By making it less about the equipment and more about how they see the world around them, some pretty cool stuff happens.
