Popular gym-wear brand slammed for lack of diversity in leaked image from photo shoot

Active-wear brand Gymshark has provoked anger after a behind-the-scenes image from a recent photoshoot was leaked on Facebook. The image shows 7 models, all of which are no larger than a US size 4. It has since caused an outcry from women demanding representation of larger body sizes.

The behind-the-scenes photo was leaked last week after the brand’s promotional photoshoot in London. Despite obvious efforts towards inclusivity, many commenters felt that Gymshark had fallen short in this aspect.

French art school gives students blackface to “diversify” brochures

When the Lyon-based Émile Cohl art school wanted to advertise in the U.S., they published a group photo of their students on the American version of the website. But it all got terribly wrong when they were busted for photoshopping the students’ skin to make it appear darker. Apparently, it was an attempt to “add diversity” to the image, and the school got under fire when a former student tweeted the two versions of the image.

Q+A with Bloomberg’s Photo Editor: Why Diversity of Photographer Voices is a Must

With a background in literature and journalism, today Eugene Reznik is the Digital Features Photo Editor at Bloomberg. Before grabbing that gig, he was the Director of Photography of the digital publication Hopes&Fears, an editor at American Photo Magazine, and a writer for Time Magazine’s LightBox photography section.

In his current role at Bloomberg, we wanted to find out more about his needs for photography – including what he’s looking for and how he finds new talent.

What we learned is that for Eugene, diversity of photographer voices couldn’t be more important. “A large part of [my work] means tapping into a diversity of voices to tell our stories visually, voices that have been historically underrepresented in journalism, and frankly, continue to be today.”

Photographer recreates famous brand ads to point out to the lack of diversity in the industry

We are surrounded by commercials, promotional images and all sorts of advertising material. Most of us take it for granted and doesn’t think much about the message these materials send. But an L.A. based photographer, Raffael Dickreuter, paid attention to advertising campaigns of famous brands and noticed something very negative about them – they lack diversity.

Alex Baker is a portrait and lifestyle driven photographer based in Valencia, Spain. She works on a range of projects from commercial to fine art and has had work featured in publications such as The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveller and El Mundo, and has exhibited work across Europe

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
