Nikon kills off the Coolpix B600 – several accessories under “temporary suspension”

Nikon has discontinued its Coolpix B600 bridge camera due to parts supply uncertainty, released in March 2019. The camera wasn’t particularly high end, typically selling for around $350, housing a 16-megapixel 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor and only capable of shooting 1080p video, but at only just over two years old, it seems a bit soon for a camera that boasts a 60x optical zoom.

As well as killing off the Coolpix B600, Nikon has also announced the “temporary suspension” of several other accessories, including the EH-5D AC adapter, the SU-800 infrared on-camera commander and its RC1C ringlight kit along with the SB-R200 speedlights.

End of an era? The Sony A9 is showing up discontinued at online retailers

Released in early 2017, the Sony A9 immediately proved itself to be a very popular camera. It still continued to remain in Sony’s lineup for almost two years after its Mark II successor was announced in October 2019. Now, though, it seems that the original Sony A9 might be coming to an end as retailers including B&H are listing the Sony A9 as being discontinued.

Despite retailers listing the camera as being disconnected, it is still listed on the Sony USA website. It’s listed as being on sale, too – perhaps a clearout sale? – with a pretty hefty $1,000 discount, bringing the cost down to $2,999. That being said, there’s no “Add to cart” button. Just a button to be notified when it becomes available. There are a couple left on Amazon, though.

Nikon kills off more of its APS-C and full-frame F mount lenses

I’ve been saying for years that the “Death of DSLRs” will come when the manufacturers give up on them and not before – no matter what people on YouTube or in Facebook groups might say. And, well, the time finally seems to be upon us where that’s happening. Canon is killing off EF mount lenses, Nikon probably isn’t planning to replace its DSLRs and they just killed off more lenses.

With just the AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR APS-C kit lens being killed off a few days ago and the 200mm f/2G ED VR II last month, it now seems Nikon has expanded the list of discontinued lenses. Nikon has said that they’re going to be bringing out more lenses, but they’re all going to be Z mount lenses, not F mount.

It looks like Sony’s finally killed off the A-mount camera system

Sony’s A-mount – or, to be more accurate, what was originally Minolta’s A mount – finally seems to have been killed off. As spotted by Sony Alpha Rumors, Sony has removed all of their A-mount DSLR and DSLT camera from their product database on the Sony website. Retailers around the world are also now showing Sony A-Mount cameras as “No longer available”.

It’s not an entirely unexpected turn of events, however. Sony’s gone full-on into its E mount line, and now that they’ve released an actual flagship mirrorless camera with the Sony A1, their lineup is pretty much complete and there’s really no need to hang on to those old legacy products anymore.

Canon just killed off a lot more EF & EF-S mount DSLR lenses with more going soon

Canon’s cull of DSLR lenses continues. According to a report from Canon Rumors, no fewer than nine more Canon EF and EF-S lenses have been added to the discontinued list, with four more Canon EF primes (including some sports and wildlife big guns) slated to be discontinued at some point during 2021.

With a couple of notable exceptions, like the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM and Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L USM, the lenses aren’t particularly high end, although there are a lot of consumer models on the list, suggesting Canon might be either getting ready to push more towards EOS M for entry-level or maybe they’re about to give us an APS-C RF mount body.

Canon 85mm f/1.2L II and 70-200mm f/4L IS II the latest victims in EF mount DSLR lens purge

Pentax might be clinging onto DSLRs for dear life, but if it wasn’t already clear the Canon had pretty much abandoned its DSLRs – what with the 7D line discontinued and the EOS R5 and EOS R6 effectively becoming replacements for the 5D and 6D DSLR lines respectively – I think their decision to kill off a number of popular higher-end lenses speaks volumes.

According to a report on Canon Rumors, who is also running a tally of recently discontinued Canon lenses, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM II and the somewhat legendary Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II are now also discontinued. Unlike previously killed off EF lenses, though, at least the two new ones on the list have RF equivalents.

Nikon D5600 was the best-selling DSLR camera in 2020, according to a recent report. However, Nikon Japan has listed it as an “old product” on its website. In other words, it looks like the camera already is or will soon be discontinued despite its popularity.

Godox has killed off its A1 Bluetooth smartphone flash trigger

The Godox smartphone flash and Bluetooth remote control unit, the Godox A1, has been discontinued. The Godox A1 was released in 2017 to quite some fanfare. It was the first device to really let smartphone users shoot images using the speedlights and strobes they already owned – Well, if you had an iPhone or one of a handful of select Android devices you could.

Since that initial release, though, and despite users constantly asking for better Android support, it hasn’t really seen many updates. And with the Bluetooth functionality now incorporated into the Godox X2T and Flashpoint R2Pro Mark II triggers, Godox has abandoned the original A1 entirely.
