Yashica announces Y35, a digitized version of Yashica Electro 35

Legendary Japanese camera brand Yashica has recently announced a comeback. After a series of teaser videos, they have finally launched the Kickstarter campaign. The camera they are making is called Yashica Y35, and it’s a pretty unusual blend of the analog and the digital.

Yashica Y35 features the same design as the Electro 35, but on the inside, it’s quite different. It “recaptures the joy and meaning of analog photography,” but turns it into digital. Their campaign says “expect the unexpected,” and indeed – this is quite an unexpected camera. And in many aspects a pretty cool one, too.

Sony announces Digital Filter: in-camera graduated ND filter

Sony has announced “Digital Filter”, a new camera app that mimics the use of graduated ND filters. It allows you to divide the scene you’re shooting into two or three areas and set exposure and white balance for each of them separately. As a result, you can get an image with balanced light when shooting sunsets and other backlit landscape scenes.

The New Leica M10 is available, introducing ISO dial and other new features

This is the thinnest digital M camera of all time, with improved performance and more intuitive handling. It comes with an ISO setting dial on top, along with some other new and interesting features.

Polaroid Pop – an instant digital camera that will produce 3×4″ prints

This year’s CES has brought us some interesting news. Polaroid is one of the brands that launched a new product at CES 2017. After Snap and Snap Touch, they bring another instant camera that combines analog and digital technique. Only this one produces 3 x 4“ prints, unlike the previous two models which produce smaller, 2 x 3“ prints.

Storage is definitely taken for granted these days. CompactFlash and SD cards are cheaper than they’ve ever been. They’re available in extremely large sizes, which seem to be growing on a monthly basis, that are easily accessible. New cameras with faster framerates, 4K UHD video, and ultra high megapixel images keep driving the technology bigger and faster.

This was not always the case, though. It used to be that the early digital cameras used large and unwieldy storage formats. Some even used 3.5″ floppy discs. There was no USB, no native driver support, and serial ports were slow and flaky at best. In this video, we take a trip back to the 90s with The 8-Bit Guy, David Murray as he takes these classic digital cameras out for a spin.

The World’s first digital camera, introduced by the man who invented it

Steven Sasson invented the world’s first digital camera while working at Eastman Kodak in 1975. It weighed around 8 pounds (3.6kg) and shot a mere 0.01MP. It’s crazy to think how far we’ve come since those early days.  We’ve gone from 30 images on a delicate cassette to thousands on something as small as a fingernail.

In this video, Steven shows us around the camera, talks us through its operation, and laments on the difficulties faced during its development. Hearing how far they expected digital to go compared to how far it actually has come is fascinating.

Engineers Invented A Batteryless Digital Camera That Can Power Itself Forever Using Excess Light

 

Let’s face it, batteries in general are a real drag. They’re easy to forget, add weight to an already heavy gear bag, and they have the habit of running out of juice just when we need them the most. Luckily, a team of engineers from Columbia University have discovered a way to eliminate the need for them to power a digital camera. In a report released by the team, which is led by Shree K.
