The Nikon D850 has the same autofocus system as the D5 but it’s not as good

We know that the Nikon D850 autofocus system isn’t that great for video. This wasn’t really going to be much of a surprise. But it seems that it’s not as quite good as it could be when it comes to stills, either. The Nikon D850 autofocus is the same as that found in the flagship Nikon D5. And while the D850 does seem to outperform just about every other Nikon out there, it can’t keep up with its big brother.

Matt Granger felt that he was missing more shots with the D850 than he was with his D5. So, he puts the two to the test, side by side in this video. With the assistance of a 4th dan taekwondo black belt subject, Matt sets to work pairing the two off against each other.

Nikon & Canon both report shipping delays for new DSLRs

I don’t suppose this bit of news will be much of a problem for most people. A limited edition 100th anniversary Nikon D5 is either going to be way over budget or just not that interesting to the majority of Nikon shooters. As for the 6D Mark II, it’s proven to be surprisingly popular. Surprising when you consider the early reviews and disappointments.

Regardless, both Nikon Japan and Canon Japan have announced that these DSLRs are being hit with shipping delays. Nikon released a statement that the 100th anniversary edition Nikon D5 has been delayed by a couple of weeks to “early August”. Canon’s statement cites the number orders surprissing their expectations.

It’s been a while now since Nikon’s 100th anniversary products were teased in February. But now, Nikon have finally announced pricing for all of the 100th anniversary equipment. Anniversary and other limited edition kit is often seen as quite collectable. As a result, much of it is simply purchased and put in a display cabinet, never to actually be used.

The actual anniversary isn’t until July 25th, but the products are available to order now through authorised Nikon retailers. The items will be available until August 31st, 2017, so there’s only about an 11 week window if you want one. Below is a rundown of the anniversary products available, along with the price of the regular edition version of each item.

These are Nikon’s 100th anniversary commemorative cameras & lenses

It’s not exactly a secret that Nikon is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. But what has kept many in suspense is exactly what camera bodies they’ll use to celebrate it. After all, Nikon has a history of creating special and exclusive cameras for various events. Now it seems there are special 100th anniversary editions of both the Nikon D5 and Nikon D500 bodies.

There also seems to be a 100th anniversary edition of the “Holy Trinity” lenses. The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR and 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR. In all cases, the typical black finish seems to have been replaced by a rather pretty gunmetal grey.

Shooting wildlife with a crop sensor vs full frame & 1.4x teleconverter

The crop vs full frame debate will never end. Of that there is little doubt. The truth is, for the vast majority of people out there, there’s really going to be virtually no practical difference between the two. But there are times when one definitely shines over the other. Wildlife is one such case. Camera resolution being equal, the extra reach of a crop body can be a valuable asset.

The alternative is teleconverters. They’ve been around for years. Common in the days of film, and still used today by those wanting a little more reach out of their lenses. They do have their drawbacks, though. In this video, wildlife photographer Steve Perry talks about the advantages and disadvantages of shooting a Nikon D5 with a 1.4x teleconverter vs the cropped sensor Nikon D500.

Major D5 firmware update is a welcome one for both stills and video shooters

Nikon have released a somewhat substantial V1.10 firmware update for the Nikon D5, addressing many issues that have been reported by customers.  The biggest being the record time limit for shooting video.

Electronic vibration reduction has also been added when shooting movies, while stills shooters receive a few very welcome additions for shooting through the viewfinder.  A number of updates to the D5’s web interface when running in HTTP server mode  have also been added.
