What to do when the wedding goes wrong, and you’re the photographer

You don’t have to be crazy to be a wedding photographer, but it definitely helps. You’re mostly there to record the memories of a couple’s special day. Except there are usually heaps of expectations and layers of pressure. Add a couple of family feuds that would make an interesting Shakespeare play, plus a strict timeline and thousands of dollars, and you’re in for some fun!

Something inevitably will go wrong. At the last wedding I shot (and I’m hoping it will stay as the last!), the bride’s car broke down en route to the venue, so she had to flag down a taxi in the street. Meanwhile, one of the pageboys fell in the pond, fully dressed in his little suit and ended up walking down the aisle in bare feet. Still, it was a beautiful day, and we just rolled with the punches.

Bride ‘cancels’ bridesmaid and asks her to be unpaid photographer instead

A bridesmaid shared the story of how her friend demoted her at the last second before the wedding ceremony and demanded that she become her unpaid photographer instead. The woman, called Aila (presumably not her real name) posted on the popular Reddit forum AITA to ask if she was correct to walk out on the wedding and her so-called friend at the request.

Allegedly, the professional wedding photographer had taken ill and had to leave while the wedding party was getting ready. That left the bride in a situation where she didn’t have a photographer at very short notice.

A Pennsylvania bride was shocked to receive her wedding images to find that “crazy eyes” had been photoshopped onto anyone who was blinking. Anaya Ramos-Bridgeford had been excited about viewing the images from her wedding but was left in hysterics when she spotted the error.

Anaya subsequently posted the offending photos to Facebook giving pretty much the entire world a good laugh. It turned out, however, that the fault wasn’t that of her wedding photographer, but of the editing company he had outsourced the retouching to.

It’s the stuff of nightmares: you’ve been asked by a close friend to photograph their wedding. You feel like you can’t say no, but you’re not a professional wedding photographer. So what do you do? One Reddit user said ‘I do’ to her friends, only to regret it bitterly during the actual event when a heated argument with the groom caused her to take extreme measures.

When you’re focused on getting the perfect shot, you may forget about everything around you. Even a swimming pool that’s right behind you. This is exactly what happened to a team photographer of Aperina Studios. While shooting the ceremony at a grand Indian wedding, he fell into a pool behind him. The moment was caught on camera, showing the soaking wet photographer, as well as the bride and groom’s priceless reaction.

The coronavirus pandemic has stopped all of us in our tracks. All social gatherings have been postponed, so many people are out of work right now, including wedding photographers. Chris Wallace of Carpe Diem Photography was set to have plenty of work in 2020, but then everything stopped. Still, he didn’t lose his creativity and the desire to shoot. He threw and shot his own wedding ceremony – made entirely from Lego. The photos are amusing and incredibly cute, and Chris kindly shared them with DIYP along with some BTS shots.

This bridezilla threatened to withhold pay unless the photographer shot everything on her list

This is why I don’t shoot weddings. Ok, it’s not the only reason why I don’t shoot weddings, but having to deal with people like this is the main reason why I don’t shoot weddings – especially when most of them don’t want to pay the photographer what they deserve or even need to charge in order to thrive and survive as a business.

One bride in particular, though, has taken crazy to a whole new level. She’s created a five-page checklist of photos she wants the photographer to get, and is refusing to pay them unless they show her every single last one of them having been captured. She also posted her checklist to Facebook for those who might want some tips for booking their own wedding photographer.

This Saturday, arson was confirmed in an abandoned building in Dayton, Ohio.
