This stunning image proves that early bird catches the perfect photo

A few days ago, Serbian photographer Dejan Valek shared a series of crane photos he recently took, showing cranes and a sunrise above a frozen lake. They’re not only magnificent, but they’re proof of why early bird photographers get to capture the perfect sunrise and the photo exactly as they’d imagined.

One of the photos completely stole my attention and made me return to it dozens of times. As I always love sharing photos like this, it’s what I will do in this article. I chatted with Dejan a bit about how he took this splendid photo, and he kindly shared some interesting details with DIYP.

Edelkrone has announced its successor to the Edelkrone JibONE, announced in 2020. No, it’s not the JibTWO, it’s the JibONE V2. It offers all of the features of the original. In fact, according to the specs, it’s pretty much identical. It’s the same size, the same weight, has the same mounting options, same load capacity, same camera travel, same speeds, same power inputs and power consumption, same everything.

But it does have some new features, too. It comes with better wireless connectivity with a longer range, improved power management with auto power-off, an information screen with instant feedback for the user to see what it’s doing and can be fully wired when you’re shooting somewhere with a lot of interference. And right now, there’s a $300 launch discount that makes it cheaper than the original.

This DIY 3D printed “Micro Jib” is the world’s smallest camera crane and lives on your desktop

We’ve covered a lot of ways to mount a camera overhead over the last few years, but this is probably the fanciest and most elegant. Because it’s not just to give you an overhead cam. Oh no, this Micro Jib by Lewin Day at Mechanistic is a full-on mini crane that lives on your desk and will let you mount the camera at whatever position you want.

There are no commercial options available for small desktop-sized mini cranes, so Lewin designed and built his own. It was inspired by Ivan Miranda’s giant 3D printed camera crane (which is very different to Alex Chappel’s similarly massive 3D printed camera crane), but is small enough to sit on your desk without getting in the way.

This huge DIY camera crane built with metal tubes and 3D printing has a very cool trick up its sleeve

There are a lot of great tools out there for moving your camera these days, and there are plenty of more affordable options out there for most of them, too. Including camera cranes. So, why did Ivan Miranda decide to build his own? Well, when you break your tripod, need to replace it and have a whole bunch of large 3D printers at your disposal… Why not?

This is a pretty large build, as you can see from the thumbnail above and it’s very different to the one we saw from Alex Chappel a few months ago. Ivan’s is more of a traditional style crane, rather than the stand Alex built, but like Alex, Ivan utilised some metal tubes and 3D printing to turn his vision into a reality. And I think he pulled it off quite nicely.

The Edelkrone JibONE is a motorised remote controllable mini-jib for your camera

I see a lot of jibs, sliders, cranes and other doohickies appear across my screen as new gear is announced. Other than the ridiculous ones they use in Hollywood, not many of them grab my attention. But Edelkrone’s new JibONE certainly has. On first glance, it looks much like any other mini-jib for your camera, except that it has Edelkrone written on it. But this one also has built-in motors and can be controlled via your phone.

For most of us, no matter how much fancy kit we buy, no matter how good we think we’ve got it, something comes along that just makes us feel totally inadequate. The iconic dolly crane from Saturday Night live is such a thing. And it makes the cranes that most of us might use in our own productions look like toys.

How to build your own DIY camera jib for overhead shots for less than $35

We’ve shown you a few overhead camera rigs before. This one, though, has to be amongst the least expensive DIY solutions I’ve seen. Based around a square metal tube, the construction is about as simple as it gets.

The video comes from YouTube user Energy Researcher. He goes through the build step by step, although there’s just really not much to it. Even if you’re not that great at DIY, this should pose no problem.
