The new modular Zhiyun Crane 3S gimbal is built to handle big beefy cameras

Zhiyun has just announced their new Zhiyun Crane 3S motorised gimbal, and it’s a bit of a monster. It’s based around the design of the Crane 3 LAB, but the Crane 3S is a very different animal indeed. For a start, the weight capacity has been raised to an impressive 6.5kg, thanks to newly engineered motors. It’s not a replacement model for the Crane 3 LAB, but more a higher capacity version of it.

To account for the bulk of the larger weight capacity, the Crane 3S is also modular, allowing you to reconfigure it in different ways to account for different cameras. It features a whopping nine mounting points, has a couple of removable handles, and comes with an arm extension to handle cameras as large as the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro G2.

The Zhiyun Crane 3 LAB comes with some pretty noticeable physical differences as well as tech upgrades over the Crane 2, and I recently posted a video on how those two compare. If the Zhiyun WEEBILL was not a boy enough for you, how about the bigger brother, the Zhiyun Crane 3 LAB? We took this gimbal through the paces, and if you only have ten seconds for this review, here is the verdict: it’s the best gimbal we’ve used to date. Is it perfect, no? but it currently has a set of features that no other gimbal at this price point (or probably higher) provides.

As always, if you have any questions about the Crane 3, let me know in the comments and I will answer ASAP.

The Crane 3 is probably the best Gimbal you can buy for $899.00 (basic) or $1,199.00 (Creator Package). If you want a quick overview of what you’ll get with the box, here is a video to look at, but if you came here for function and performance, read on!

During NAB 2019, DIYP had the chance to sit down with DP Rah Sharma on the Zhiyun stand to talk about how he uses the Zhiyun Crane 3 LAB for shooting cinematic footage. As you can see from the rig Rah’s using, which includes a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K in a SmallRig cage with a matte box, the Crane 3 LAB can take some serious weight.
