Haida’s new PROII 2-in-1 CPL-VND lets you control polarisation separately from neutral density

Variable ND filters aren’t exactly a new thing. Neither are polarisers. In fact, without polarisers, variable ND filters wouldn’t even exist. Pretty much all variable ND filters are the result of cross-polarisation, stacking two polarising filters on top of each other with their relative angles to each other controlling the light that goes through. As such, all Variable ND filters are also polarisers. But most have one big problem. You can’t rotate the polarisation.

There are one or two filters on the market to overcome this, that allow you to rotate the polarisation independent of the overall exposure. And now there’s another one, as Haida has announced its new PROII CPL-VND 2-in-1 filter with 3-7 stops of variable ND stopping power along with a handle that lets you rotate the polarization while maintaining your level of neutral density.

The Nisi S6 system is designed for landscape photographers who would like to have a filter system for ultra-wide-angle lenses. Specifically for those without a regular filter thread. The system comes with a rotating CPL (circular polarizer), and it allows the use of two more filters. The S6 is a new iteration of a (similarly named) S5, and it features a few improvements.

Let’s first have a look at the improvements and then discuss the handling and use of the S6 system. We will also have a look at a few sample images.

If there is one thing I have grown to love about photography, it is the ability to capture, control, and manipulate time.  Photography is giving us the option to see things in ways that are impossible to achieve with our naked eyes. This opens up a whole new world of creative options.

While cameras do offer us a fair amount of control using ISO, shutter, and aperture, we sometimes need to look at other options to get extremely long exposures. This is particularly true where there is a lot of light around. Add that to the wide shots you can get with a  Sigma 14-24mm weird construction, and you soon realize the need for something like the Haida M15 filter holder system.

Circular polarizing (CPL) filters are one of the most useful tools a landscape photographer can have in their toolkit, and in this video from landscape and nature photographer Joshua Cripps, you’re going to find out why.

Of course, they’re not limited to just landscapes, they can also help to cut through reflections and glare on glass and other reflective surfaces, so they can also be great for street, automotive and even portrait photography.
