These photos show that Halloween costumes were much scarier 100 years ago

Although Halloween can be traced back to ancient times, the celebration today is all about getting a sugar rush if you’re a kid or getting hammered if you’re an adult. And while creative, costumes are rarely truly scary, especially if they are DIY.

However, Halloween costumes looked way different 100 in the 19th and early 20th centuries. You don’t believe me? Well, there are photos that prove it! Thanks to artist Ossian Brown, we get to travel back in time and see what the costumes were like back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And if you ask me, “creepy” doesn’t even begin to describe them!

Asher Svidensky is one of those photographers whose photos you see once and remember for years. This is why I was thrilled to learn that he photographed Kukeri, often described as one of the last pagan rituals in Europe.

For this photo project, Asher traveled to Razlog village in Bulgaria, photographing minacious-looking costumes of the Kukeri rituals. And as if the ritual itself wasn’t interesting enough – Asher’s story revolves around “The Monstress of Razlog,” a girl who’s a very unlikely star of this predominantly male tradition.

Here is an eye candy for any of you who are going to a costume party this Halloween. Photographer Bryan Troll built a full body Nikon camera custom. That alone was kind of impressing (and by kind of I mean extremely), but he did not stop there. The camera is fully functional with a strobe, “real” camera and an LCD. And the LCD is actually showing the photos that the camera is taking.

We asked Bryan if the costume was hard to build and he told us that

I thought that I can’t think of a better Halloween costume for a photographer than a huge camera. But Yohei Shimada took it to a higher level: his Halloween costume is a working Canon DSLR that takes actual photos.

These Pagan-inspired photos show mystical roots of Slavic culture

National culture and history are often an inspiration for artists. Polish photographer Marcin Nagraba creates work strongly inspired by the ancient culture of Slavic countries, the culture that existed before Christianity came. His hauntingly beautiful photos are inspired by heathen beliefs and rites our ancestors had centuries ago.

Marcin works together with a talented costume artist Agnieszka Osipa. She creates stunning costumes, so complex and beautiful that you’d expect to see them in a TV series such as Game of Thrones. With those costumes, Marcin creates photos that will take you centuries back. And from time to time, they’ll even make you feel shivers down your spine.

Photographer spent $1500 to turn his 3 year old into Wonder Woman for Halloween

For parents, having great photographs of your kids is a big deal. For the kids, dressing up at Halloween is a big deal. This year, commercial photographer Josh Rossi decided to combine the two with his three year old daughter, Nellee. To fulfil her dream of becoming Wonder Woman, just spent $1,500 on a hand made leather costume and props for the ultimate photo shoot.

It may sound like an expensive investment, but for such unique and special photos, I’d say it’s worth it, though. Besides, one could easily spend that on regular studio portraits, so why not? DIYP wanted to find out more about the project, so we got in touch with Josh to have a chat.

Dear TSA, This Tip Can Save Your Project

If you are doing projects that require traveling with gear, props or costumes you know that a major risk is getting your gear inspected and messed up by the TSA. Especially the gear that goes in the belly of the plane, where you can’t explain first handed what it is.

Most “regular” bag content can take a bit of rough search, what’s the worst that can happen? A wrinkled Hawaiian t-shirt? Delicate gear and costumes, however, deserve a more delicate treatment. Kat Gray of Valkyrie Studios shared a very insightful tip on how to let the TSA know that they should be careful. Kat places a note telling the TSA what are the weird things in the bag and how they should be treated. She is also very precise when describing the box content, and highlighting the fact that it took a lot of work to create the things inside the box. All that while showing nothing but respect to the TSA team doing their jobs.
