Death of creativity: AI-generated image wins a fine arts competition

AI text-to-image (even text-to-video) platforms have been a thing for a while now. We’ve seen plenty of creative stuff generated through Midjourney or DALL-E… But what happens when one of them wins a fine arts contest?

Jason Allen recently went viral after winning the first prize in Colorado State Fair’s contest with an AI-generated image. As you can probably imagine, this has made artists shocked and furious. How could he win?! He only typed a short prompt, pressed Enter, and in a minute or so got a picture that won first place. But is it really what the process looked like?

BMC Ecology and Evolution image competition 2022 has published the results of its annual contest. And the winner is like a scene from a science fiction movie. It shows a “zombie fungus” growing from the body of a dead fly, and it’s a reminder of how impressive nature is, even on its tiniest scale.

Photographer loses contest prize after another artist claims he’d taken the photo

Photographer Clancy Gebler Davies won the British Journal of Photography (BJP) Female in Focus Award last year. However, her winning sparked some controversy after another photographer accused her of, well, basically stealing the photo. He claimed that it was he who actually took the shot, and it resulted in the winning image being withdrawn from the Awards completely.

Nature TTL Photographer of the Year has just announced its 2022 winners. Seen as a group, the photos show all sides of nature and wildlife: from tender and magical, to raw and threatening. And when we look at the individual photo that won this year’s contest: it’s all about the latter.

The winning image of Nature TTL Photographer of the Year 2022 shows a caracal carrying a dead flamingo in its jaws. While we all know this is normal in the wild, the photo isn’t for the faint-hearted. The iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) has announced the winners of its 2022 contest. Believe it or not, the contest is celebrating its jubilee this year: it’s been 15 years since it’s been around, just like the iPhones. I feel kinda old now.

Anyhow, the 15th annual competition received thousands of submissions from all over the world, and it has selected the best of the best. Antonio Denti from Italy won the Grand Prize, but there are many other stunning photos among the category winners. So, let’s check them out!

The International Portrait Photographer of the Year has announced its 2022 winners. The overall prize has been awarded to Jatenipat Ketpradit from Thailand. His striking image shows warriors from a remote Ethiopian tribe.

I personally find portrait photography to be one of the most difficult genres. But at the same time, as a viewer, I find it to be one of my favorites. So whether you’re looking for inspiration for your own work or just enjoy looking at stunning portrait photos – let’s take a walk through this year’s winners of the International Portrait Photographer of the Year.

Alex Baker is a portrait and lifestyle driven photographer based in Valencia, Spain. She works on a range of projects from commercial to fine art and has had work featured in publications such as The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveller and El Mundo, and has exhibited work across Europe

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
