Concept Cameras

These crazy looking cameras don’t really exist – They were created using AI

Cool new ideas for concept cameras come out with alarming regularity. Painstakingly modelled in 3D software like Blender or Maya or something and then textured, lit and rendered to look as real as possible. They’re a great way to see what the general population thinks of a camera design before actually manufacturing it. Or they’re a good way for independents to tell manufacturers “Hey, this is what we want!”

The cameras here, though, aren’t concept cameras. They weren’t even modelled by a human. They were created by the AI system known as DALL-E 2 which attempts to generate photorealistic images based on written sentences. Mathieu Stern wanted to test its limits to see if it could come up with some cool camera designs based on somewhat unorthodox themes and… Well, yeah, it did!

Canon wants to make its concept desktop surveillance camera as not-creepy as possible

Canon has unveiled a new concept camera – something they seem to have been doing with alarming regularity over the last couple of years. I think it’s actually quite interesting, seeing a big brand like Canon taking on some of the ideas that would simply be seen as “gimmicks” had they been done by a lesser known company.

This new one, though… Well, it’s definitely a little strange. It’s called the Posture Fit and it’s essentially a camera that sits on your desk watching you. All the time. It makes sure that you’re taking enough breaks, that your posture’s good, and yells at you (in as cute a way as possible – apparently) to get off your arse or to sit up straight.

At just about every show I’ve been to for the last couple of years where Canon has been in attendance, they’ve been showing off some concept camera prototypes. We featured a couple of them last year during The Photography Show 2018 in the UK. And at CP+ 2019 in Japan a few months ago, they were showing off more. Now, Nikkan is reporting that three of these concept cameras will be released before the end of this year and suggested they are cameras we’ve seen before.

It looks like Canon may be hoping to succeed where Nikon failed with its short-lived KeyMission series of cameras. The folks at Cinema5D spotted a rather interesting looking camera on the Canon stand at CP+ 2019 this year, and so they had a quick chat with them about it. It looks like Canon may be planning to tackle the action camera market.

The video above is in Japanese, although it comes with English subtitles. So make sure to turn those on if you’re having a little trouble following the conversation.

Even though I’m not primarily a Canon shooter, I’m always intrigued by the concept cameras and sensors that Canon bring to show off at shows around the world. During The Photography Show, Canon brought two with them. Actually, they brought a bunch, but they all basically stem from two different types of camera. We had a chat with David Parry on the Canon stand to find out more.
