Hacking Photography - one Picture at a time
Frequency separation is typically seen as a technique for retouching skin – albeit often quite badly these days. But that’s not its only use. Separating colour from detail offers a lot of other potential benefits for working on your images.
In this particular example, from travel & landscape photographer Michael Breitung, it’s chromatic aberration and colour fringing that get the frequency separation treatment.
In January 2015, the Space Needle in Seattle had a 360 webcam installed. Over the past three years, the camera has been taking a 360 panorama of the city every ten minutes. Google engineer Ricardo Martin Brualla decided to turn the three-years worth of images into a timelapse of the city. As a result, you can see the seasons changing and the city growing before your eyes, in under four minutes. It’s captivating to watch, and Brualla shares some details about how he did it.
While Pantone is a widely used color matching system, it is also an artistic inspiration. Graphic Designer Andrea Antoni uses it to match the colors of landscapes and cityscapes with Pantone palettes. He travels and takes photos of scenery and cities, and finds Pantone colors in these scenes. Later on, he digitally adds his hand holding a matching Pantone swatch for each image and turns travel images into unique memories.
