Build this DIY fully stabilised DJI RS2 camera mount rig for under $500

If there’s one thing that many of us would love to be able to do, it’s attaching a fully stabilised gimbal camera to a vehicle. It lets you get shots that would otherwise be impossible. But such a task is not cheap. Commercial rigs cost $20,000 or more and that doesn’t even include the cost of the actual gimbal.

Bestboy Adam, though, has come up with a pretty neat DIY solution in this video that you can put together yourself for as little as $500, including the gimbal, using a mix of items from various manufacturers to which you can attach your DJI RS2 gimbal (or probably any, with the right brackets) to get that nice clean stabilised driving footage.

Test show that an airbag will smash your camera into your face rather than protect you

Filming from moving vehicles has been happening for as long as movies and vehicles have existed. But with the rise of movies such as the Fast & Furious series, it’s becoming more common. Not just in Hollywood, but amongst new filmmakers and even vloggers. And if they’re using something larger than a phone, they’ll usually have a second person in the passenger seat filming.

But what happens to the passenger in the event of a crash when the airbag is deployed? That was the question asked by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). It was put to the test and answered by Dr Cynthia Bir at the University of Southern California, and the results are pretty devastating. It’s not just the camera guy that’s put at huge risk, but the driver, too.

Photojournalists go through many dangerous situations during their career. Have you ever wondered how this could be changed? Dillon Kane has, so he designed a car of the future – a concept created especially for photojournalists. He submitted his design to Magna International’s “Main Event” design competition, and won the first place.

His concept is called “30 Degrees West”, and it shows his vision of a car for 2030. It’s a car for photojournalists to drive and capture whatever they need to capture. Dillon showed a lot of creativity, and his concept really has some interesting features. He shared his vision and idea behind the project with DIYP.

Alex Baker is a portrait and lifestyle driven photographer based in Valencia, Spain. She works on a range of projects from commercial to fine art and has had work featured in publications such as The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveller and El Mundo, and has exhibited work across Europe

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
