Tearing down the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.7-7.1L IS USM reveals a very complex design

This is probably one of the most in-depth lens teardowns I’ve seen from Lensrentals. Their efforts weren’t by choice, though. The lens lied to them. The team recently posted a teardown of the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens that had a broken element inside it. It appeared as though the element might reside inside the stabilization system, which is relatively easy to remove.

It turned out, though, that the IS system of the lens was simply masking the true location of the broken element. This resulted in the need to pretty much completely dismantle the entire lens, down to almost its core constituent parts, in order to track down exactly where in the optical makeup it was.

Here are full resolution sample photos from the EOS R5, R6 and Canon’s new RF lenses

There have been a lot of questions raised about the new Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras, not to mention their new lenses, when it comes to image quality, as there often is when a new camera is released. And as is often the way, we usually only see the web-sized images posted to social media or, at best, a 4K resolution image in a YouTube video.

Well, a curious reader on the Fred Miranda forums has discovered the pages containing some full-size samples on the Canon Japan website for the EOS R5 and EOS R6 as well as the new 85mm f/2 Macro, 600mm f/11, 800mm f/11 and 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 lenses.

Canon announces RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1, their longest range telephoto zoom yet

Along with the 85mm, 600mm, and 800mm primes and EOS R5 and R6 cameras, Canon has also announced a new zoom lens today. Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is a super-telephoto zoom, and it’s the company’s longest-range zoom lens so far.
