Canon apologises already for Canon EOS R8 delays

In what might come as completely unexpected and shocking news to some but comes as absolutely no surprise to most of us, Canon has updated its apology announcement. The apology is for delays in the shipping and availability of certain products. It was updated last November to add the then newly announced products, the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R6 Mark II.

Those two cameras are still on the list, but now with the addition of the recently announced Canon EOS R8. The EOS RP (and EOS R) successor was announced only a week ago, but Canon already cannot keep up with the – apparently unexpected – demand.

Canon updates the list of delayed products it can’t supply fast enough to meet demand

Canon, like just about every other manufacturer, is facing camera shortages. Back in March, they announced a list going over those shortages and what we’re going to have to wait for. The bad news is that list still exists and rather than keep posting new announcements each time, they’re just updating the old one. The new list still contains a number of products, and some of those products remain the same, although there are some new ones.

The good news, however, is that Canon doesn’t mention 6-month+ waits in the list, as they did in March and there are far fewer products on it than this time last year. The list has changed to include new items, though, like the EOS R7 and the EOS R6 Mark II, Canon says that they are shipping in order but may take longer to deliver than usual, but the wait, it seems, perhaps won’t be as long as they have been.

I got to field test the new Canon EOS R7 for night photography

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the brand new Canon EOS R7 camera yesterday, thanks to Canon España ambassadors Paco Farero and Iván Sanchez. It’s Canon’s first offering of a cropped sensor APS-C mirrorless camera, and I was keen to test it out and see what it was like.

Now first, a few caveats. I had the camera in the field for only a couple of hours. I took only still shots so I wasn’t able to try out the video component. This isn’t an in-depth review, these are purely my initial first impressions. And those are pretty favourable, I must admit.

Canon EOS R7 C rumoured to be on the way, capable of 7K 60fps raw video, but not this year

It might come as a surprise to some, but Canon Rumors says they’ve been told that there’s a Cinema EOS version of the Canon EOS R7 coming at some point. It will have the same naming convention as the Canon EOS R5 C – the cinema version of the Canon EOS R5 – and be called the Canon EOS R7 C. Don’t get too excited just yet, though. It’s not expected to be announced in 2022.

So far, CR says that the Canon EOS R7 C will record 7K footage at up to 60 frames per second in Cinema RAW Light and offer the same codec options as the Canon EOS R5 C and Canon’s other Cinema EOS cameras. Other than that, there’s not really anything else in the way of possible specs so far, but it should be pretty awesome.

Canon EOS R7 shows impressive dynamic range over the 7D but it’s not quite up to the EOS R5

Photons to Photos has published dynamic range data from the Canon EOS R7 and added it to its database. It shows some nice improvements over the original Canon 7D (as well it should) and beats out the Canon 7D Mark II by at least a small amount across the board. It still has a way to catch up to the EOS R5 but seems to be mostly on par with the highest-end Canon EOS M system camera, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II.

The fact that the Canon EOS R7 presents almost (but not quite) identical dynamic range to ISO performance as the EOS M6 Mark II would ordinarily suggest that they might actually be using the same sensor, although Canon says that the sensor in the EOS R7 is completely new.

This is what the Canon EOS R7 shutter sounds like

The Canon EOS R7 has a lot to live up to. It has to continue the legacy left by Canon’s popular 7D series. I’ve no double the EOS R7 will meet and even exceed the expectations of many, but with none really in anybody’s hands except for a select few  there are some unanswered questions. One of which being, what does it sound like?

Sure, how a shutter sounds isn’t high up on the list of priorities for a lot of photographers, but when filming secretive wildlife that can get easily spooked, a loud shutter is potentially an issue. And it’s always interesting to hear how different cameras do sound. Many people love that satisfying thunk of medium format shutters, for example. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait for EOS R7 shutter sounds as they’ve been posted to YouTube.

Canon already ‘sorry’ for supply delays for new models EOS R7 and EOS R10

It’s been a mere couple of days since Canon announced the release of not one, but two new mirrorless APS-C cameras. And now they’ve already issued an apology for severe delays in meeting demand for their new products, the Canon EOS R7, EOS R10, and the RF-S lenses.

The two new cameras add to Canon’s existing mirrorless line-up of RF mount cameras but are the first crop sensor camera bodies to be included in the mirrorless range.

Canon finally makes APS-C RF mount official with the new EOS R7 and EOS R10 mirrorless cameras

In the words of the late, great Freddie Mercury… “It finally happened, happened, happened… It fiiiiinally happened!”. Yup, Canon has now officially gone APS-C with their RF mount mirrorless system with the announcement of not one but two new APS-C RF mount mirrorless cameras with the Canon EOS R7 and EOS R10. If this doesn’t mark the end of EOS M (even though Canon apparently denies it), then I don’t know what does.

The Canon EOS R7 is a 32.5-megapixel RF mirrorless camera, with up to 30 frames per second continuous shooting and full-sensor width 4K video at up to 60fps (a first for Canon APS-C!) and up to an insane 8-stops of hybrid lens/in-body image stabilisation. The EOS R10 is a lower-priced 24-megapixel APS-C body with no IBIS but inherits the AI autofocus system from the EOS R3.

Canon rumoured to announce EOS R7 and R10 APS-C RF bodies and two lenses on May 24th (specs inside)

So, it looks like we won’t just be seeing an EOS R7 soon, but an EOS R10, too. According to multiple reports from Digicame-info and Canon Rumors (1, 2), we’ll be seeing an EOS R10, a potential successor to the Canon EOS M5 and the apparently discontinued EOS M6 Mark II, being announced on May 24th. We’re also going to be seeing an EOS R7 being announced possibly on the same day.

CR has also posted a couple of possible specs lists, which they say they have confirmed for the EOS R7, but don’t clarify on the EOS R10. If the specs lists are even close to accurate, though, it looks like Canon is kicking things off with a couple of fairly decent bodies.

This is the first rumoured set of specs for the Canon EOS R7 (and it might come with two new lenses)

Well, that didn’t take long. Just days after rumours confirm (if that in itself isn’t an oxymoron) that the Canon EOS R7 is going to be announced later this year, we have our first set of rumoured specs. Honestly, though, I’m not entirely sure how accurate these are going to be at this stage. I think most of these can be put down to some decent guesswork based on the other stuff Canon already has on the market.

But as well as a first rumoured specs list, Canon Rumors is reporting that “trustworthy sources” have told them that Canon will release two “RF-S” lenses – the mirrorless equivalent to Canon’s EF-S APS-C DSLR lenses – at the time of the EOS R7 launch.
