Canon EOS R5 snags first place in Japan camera sales

For a little while, it seemed that both Nikon (with their D5600) and Fuji (with their Fujifilm X-T4 and X100V) were getting some satisfying ranking news. But before they got to rest on their laurels comes a report from Yodobashi Camera, and puts the Canon R5 as the top-selling camera in Japan. Yodobashi Camera is the Japanese B&H and is one of the biggest Japanese consumer electronics outlets.

The report (via getnavi.jp) shares that the Canon R6 only got to 4th place but would have performed better if the stock could meet the demand.

Johnnie Behiri at CineD recently interviewed Canon Product Management Director of Image Communication Business at Canon Europe (that’s a mouthful!), Katsuyuki Nagai to talk about some fo the EOS R5 and EOS R6 overheating issues – and the limitations imposed on the camera.

Naturally, the topic of whether Canon was intentionally crippling their DSLR and mirrorless cameras so as not to impact their pro cinema line cameras came up. As one would expect, Mr Nagai not only refuted the accusations but said they belong “on the conspiracy theory pile”.

Canon releases major firmware update for EOS R6 to improve overheating (minor R5 update)

Canon has announced new v1.1.1 firmware updates for the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras. The EOS R5 has already received one firmware update to help improve overheating issues and record times recently, and now it seems some of those improvements have come to the EOS R6 as well.

The major firmware update for the EOS R6 includes a number of bug fixes and improvements, as well as the overheating issue, while the EOS R5 update is fairly minor, just resolving a couple of compatibility issues.

EOS R6 teardown reveals the timer chip that’s holding the camera back

Here at Kolari Vision, we love tearing into the newest camera gears to learn how they work and if they can be modded for infrared photography, full spectrum photography, or other things. We’ve been really excited about the R5/R6 release, and had plans to add some cooling mods and overhaul it into a proper video camera.

Reports from EOSHD that Canon uses an overheat timer rather than actual temperature readings left us a bit disappointed and calls into question whether physically cooling down the camera can actually give any more shooting time. Andrew Reid was able to bypass this timer by using a screw to override the safety shutoff switch in the battery door compartment and do a hard shutdown during recording, but this seems to corrupt video files.

Sigma subtly trolls Canon on Twitter over overheating issues

Canon’s taken quite a bit of flack around the overheating issues of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras. Canon has announced new firmware for the EOS R5 which extends the recording time a little, although it’s not going to make much practical difference to many would-be Canon filmmakers.

It’s not often, though, that we see a company making a subtle little dig at a competitor for issues with their gear, though. Sigma posted a tweet that, while it doesn’t specifically call out Canon or the EOS R5 does have a rather obvious intent, extolling the not-overheating benefits of a big heatsink in the Sigma fp.

Comparing the Canon R5 and R6 file formats (RAW, CRAW, JPEG, HEIF)

In my last post, I shot images with both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 to compare the ISO performance of both cameras. As always, this led to a lot of comments, emails, and DMs asking me if I could also compare the different file formats of these cameras. Testing the ISO of Canon EOS R5 and R6 vs 1DX Mark III and 5D Mark IV

Whenever Canon comes out with new cameras, one of my most important real-world tests is determining how clean the images look at higher ISOs. I am not testing this for scientific reasons, I am doing this test because I shoot in low light quite often and want the highest quality images for my clients. I also thought that you and the rest of the world might be interested in this as well.

Many people get caught up in the number of megapixels that a camera has on its sensor, thinking that the more the better. What people may not know is that the more megapixels they cram onto a sensor, and the closer that those pixels are to each other, the more heat build-up occurs. This increase in heat can ultimately also increase the digital noise (graininess) in our photos.

Real-world test shows overheating issues with EOS R6 make it unusable for serious video work

Up until now, most of the overheating hyperbole has been hypothetical. It’s based on documentation that Canon has released. But how closely does it represent the real world? Well, the fact that Canon has apparently patented an active cooling EF to RF adapter should be a big clue. But if you needed some real-world evidence, check this out.

Johnnie Behiri over at Cinema5D recently used the Canon EOS R6 for a couple of days shooting in Japan to produce a short film as part of his review of the camera. It was a pre-production unit, and perhaps there have been some changes to the final production camera, but this assessment does not look good at all.

Canon is releasing new RF mount adapters and one may have active cooling to address overheating

There’s been a lot of talk about Canon’s new EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras overheating since their announcement and people took a closer look at the documentation. But it seems that Canon might be doing something to address it.

Canon Rumors reports that Canon is planning to release several new EF to RF adapters this year and a Canon patent discovered by the folks at Canon News suggests that one of them might have an active cooling solution to address the overheating concerns in their new mirrorless cameras.
