This is what virtual reality was made for: immersive kitten videos

What is the internet for if it’s not for making cat videos? Well, this one could be the most expensive cat video ever if you take into account how much the camera and lens cost to shoot it. Of course, it’s not just any old cat video, this one is a virtual reality (VR) 180-degree immersive, meditative experience.

Canon’s latest masterpiece is a collaboration between Canon, renowned feline photographer Andrew Marttila, and accomplished VR content creators Hugh Hou and Keely Turner.

Large Canon EOS R5C firmware update adds a lot of usability fixes

Canon has released a new v1.0.4.1 firmware update for the Canon EOS R5c (buy here), the cine-centric version of Canon’s EOS R5 mirrorless camera (buy here). It’s a pretty large firmware with a lot of updates. There doesn’t appear to be a single massive new feature, though.

It adds support for many cinema lenses to enable features like Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus, Dual Pixel Focus Guide as well as to set the T stop number. A new power-saving mode has been added to the camera as well. It also sees a large number of UI/UX changes, additions and enhancements to help make your shooting life a little easier.

Canon updates the list of delayed products it can’t supply fast enough to meet demand

Canon, like just about every other manufacturer, is facing camera shortages. Back in March, they announced a list going over those shortages and what we’re going to have to wait for. The bad news is that list still exists and rather than keep posting new announcements each time, they’re just updating the old one. The new list still contains a number of products, and some of those products remain the same, although there are some new ones.

The good news, however, is that Canon doesn’t mention 6-month+ waits in the list, as they did in March and there are far fewer products on it than this time last year. The list has changed to include new items, though, like the EOS R7 and the EOS R6 Mark II, Canon says that they are shipping in order but may take longer to deliver than usual, but the wait, it seems, perhaps won’t be as long as they have been.

Canon issues service notice over lockups with Canon XF605, EOS C70 and EOS R5c cameras

Canon has issued a slightly odd service notice. Well, it’s not that odd for Canon XF605 owners, as it relates to a problem specifically targeting that camera. What’s a little odd is that they’ve also included the Canon EOS C70 and Canon EOS R5c in the service notice, too. Canon says they’ve confirmed the “possibility” of them being prone to the same issue although there are no actual reports of it happening in the real world (yet).

Still, if you’re shooting an FX605, an EOS C70 or an EOS R5c, there are certain situations in which various settings and actions performed on your camera may cause it to lock up and become inoperable. There’s no word on whether or not simply powering the camera down and back up again (or pulling the battery) resets the function, but a new firmware is available already for the XF605 and they’re working on updates for the other two.

VR has become huge recently. At IBC 2022, DIYP got to take a look at the latest developments in this cutting edge technology. It’s not just used in the entertainment sphere either. Fully immersive VR has serious uses from the medical world to fighter pilot training. Basically, this technology can be used to speed up training and save lives.

Ram Sarup from Canon Europe showed us the RF 5.2mm f/2.8 dual fisheye lens for the Canon EOS R mirrorless system which lets you shoot 3D 180° VR video and photos.

Canon Australia issues recall on Canon EOS R5c bodies due to autofocus problems

Canon Australia has issued a recall for early shipments of the video-centric Canon EOS R5c mirrorless cinema camera. According to the recall, this is due to a manufacturing defect in the autofocus system whereby the camera will excessively hunt to find focus in movie mode. Canon Australia does say that this only affects “selected units of the EOS R5 C digital cinema camera”.

They say that only “a very small number of units” are affected by the issue and that the recall is specifically for those who received their units on or before March 21st, 2022. So, it sounds like it’s just a very small batch and apparently, a batch that only made it to Australia which has the problem as far as we can tell. Canon Australia is asking that affected customers return their cameras to be replaced with a new one.

Canon has officially announced its video-centric EOS R5c and this beefy beast costs $4,500

The world has been expecting this camera for a long time and now it’s finally here. Canon has today announced the new Canon EOS R5c, a video-centric version of the Canon EOS R5 with active cooling (so you can actually shoot 8K for more than a few minutes) and a more streamlined UI aimed at video shooters.

Canon says that it combines the “best of both worlds” melding the EOS R5 and EOS C70 cameras into one – which you can see as soon as you turn the camera around to see how beefy it is compared to the EOS R5. The active cooling has meant that the camera is quite a bit thicker and from behind, more closely resembles the EOS C70 than its EOS R5 namesake.

Canon C70 to get 12-Bit Cinema RAW Light in upcoming firmware

Canon is set to announce new firmware for the Canon EOS C70 on Wednesday, 19th January. The headline feature of the new firmware will be the introduction of 12-Bit Cinema RAW Light recording. While Canon hasn’t announced anything yet, it appears that Canon leaked themselves via their UK website stating that it was on the way and that it would become available in March. Beyond that, it reveals no other information.

That’s not all we’re expected to hear about on Wednesday, either. Canon is also expected to announce the Canon EOS R5C, an active-cooled version of the Canon EOS R5 designed specifically for 8K cinema. We might also see some new Cinema lenses as well as possibly 8K modules for the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and Cinema EOS C500 Mark II.

Canon’s video-focused EOS R5c expected in Q1 2022

The mythical Canon EOS R5c is said to be a video-centric version of the Canon EOS R5. It’s supposed to come with active cooling and a slightly different form factor body, to eliminate the overheating issues that are just a fact of life with the EOS R5 if you want to shoot 8K (and even some 4K) video.

Many thought that it would come at some point this year (possibly NAB in October), but now Canon Rumors is reporting that its announcement has been pushed back to Q1 of 2022.

Canon EOS R5c cinema camera coming this year – and it won’t overheat!

According to Canon Rumors, Canon is going to release an EOS R5c cinema camera at some point this year. Don’t think of it like a traditional cinema camera, though. More like the Canon EOS R5‘s answer to Sony’s FX3 – which is essentially just an A7S III in a different shell and without a viewfinder.

The EOS R5c is expected to be equipped with the same image sensor as the EOS R5 and offer all of the same recording options, including 8K raw video. To get around the overheating issues that have plagued the EOS R5, though, they say it will have a slightly larger body with active cooling.
