The EOS R5 overheating issue is solved and it’s a super simple (only slightly hacky) workaround

I never even suspected that the solution might be this simple. I don’t have an EOS R5, but I figured if it was this easy to get around Canon’s time limits on the EOS R5, somebody would have tested it already. But it turns out that the EOS R5 (and presumably EOS R6) overheating limits can be beaten by a simple clock change in the camera’s settings.

The folks at Hong Kong-based production company, Vision Rouge suggested the idea of changing the clock and a user by the name of yourboylloyd on the Magic Lantern Forums decided to see if it really was that straightforward. And, well, yes. It seems that it is.

EOS R6 teardown reveals the timer chip that’s holding the camera back

Here at Kolari Vision, we love tearing into the newest camera gears to learn how they work and if they can be modded for infrared photography, full spectrum photography, or other things. We’ve been really excited about the R5/R6 release, and had plans to add some cooling mods and overhaul it into a proper video camera.

Reports from EOSHD that Canon uses an overheat timer rather than actual temperature readings left us a bit disappointed and calls into question whether physically cooling down the camera can actually give any more shooting time. Andrew Reid was able to bypass this timer by using a screw to override the safety shutoff switch in the battery door compartment and do a hard shutdown during recording, but this seems to corrupt video files.

We’ve been really excited about the Canon EOS R5 & EOS R6 release and had plans to add some cooling mods and overhaul it into a proper video camera.

Here we’ll go over the basics that we found inside, how the thermals are handled, and later share some insights we learned about how the Canon clock circuit works.

Sigma subtly trolls Canon on Twitter over overheating issues

Canon’s taken quite a bit of flack around the overheating issues of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras. Canon has announced new firmware for the EOS R5 which extends the recording time a little, although it’s not going to make much practical difference to many would-be Canon filmmakers.

It’s not often, though, that we see a company making a subtle little dig at a competitor for issues with their gear, though. Sigma posted a tweet that, while it doesn’t specifically call out Canon or the EOS R5 does have a rather obvious intent, extolling the not-overheating benefits of a big heatsink in the Sigma fp.

Comparing the Canon R5 and R6 file formats (RAW, CRAW, JPEG, HEIF)

In my last post, I shot images with both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 to compare the ISO performance of both cameras. As always, this led to a lot of comments, emails, and DMs asking me if I could also compare the different file formats of these cameras. While I still have both these cameras on loan from Canon, I decided that now would be a good time to tests these parameters for all of you (and me too).

Testing the ISO of Canon EOS R5 and R6 vs 1DX Mark III and 5D Mark IV

Whenever Canon comes out with new cameras, one of my most important real-world tests is determining how clean the images look at higher ISOs. I am not testing this for scientific reasons, I am doing this test because I shoot in low light quite often and want the highest quality images for my clients. I also thought that you and the rest of the world might be interested in this as well.

Many people get caught up in the number of megapixels that a camera has on its sensor, thinking that the more the better. What people may not know is that the more megapixels they cram onto a sensor, and the closer that those pixels are to each other, the more heat build-up occurs. This increase in heat can ultimately also increase the digital noise (graininess) in our photos.

Canon releases V1.1 EOS R5 firmware to improve video recording times

Canon has received a lot of criticism over the Canon EOS R5‘s overheating issues, especially since it started to look as if the limitations were arbitrarily imposed by Canon and not based on actual temperatures. Well, now they seem to be addressing some of those issues with a new V1.1 firmware update.

Now, this certainly isn’t going to make everybody happy, as the benefits seem relatively minor, but it is at least an improvement. As well as extending the shooting times, the firmware fixes a few typos and corrects some bugs.

Solve the EOS R5 overheating issue (kinda) with a piece of tape

There are a couple of reports right now of users managing to overcome the overheating limits of the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera. Well, sort of. By tricking the camera into thinking the battery slot door is closed when it’s not, people have found a way to reset the timer. But there’s a catch. Your footage is pretty much useless.

The video above by J. Marcus Photography demonstrates the technique, and how he was able to reset the timer using just a piece of tape over the battery door to make the camera think it was still closed. When the overheat warning came on, he removed the battery, reinserted it and magically the overheat warning was gone.

Sony A7R IV vs Nikon Z7 vs Canon EOS R5 – Is Sony still the king of Eye autofocus?

Much has been said over the years about Sony’s Eye Autofocus system and it was one of Sony’s biggest selling points for portrait photographers for a long time. Even after Canon and Nikon finally jumped into the world of mirrorless cameras, Sony still seemed to be on top when it came to their autofocus system.

But now that Nikon and Canon have had their systems out for a while and they’ve been working on them, does the same hold true today? New firmware is coming to increase EOS R5 video recording time limits

According to a report on Canon Rumors, Canon is going to be releasing some firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera. It’s not really much of a surprise, as most manufacturers seem to release cameras before they’re ready these days, following them up by a flood of firmware updates shortly after they start shipping.

But one of these future updates seems to specifically address some of the “overheating” issues to extend the record time limits – which would, again, suggest that the overheat limitations may be hard-coded into the firmware and have nothing to do with the actual temperature of any part of the camera.
