Kolari Vision’s new clip-in filters for the EOS R5 & R6 live between your lens and sensor

Kolari Vision has announced a new set of clip-in magnetic filters for the Canon EOS R5. They mount inside the camera body in front of the sensor but behind the lens. It’s compatible with native RF mount lenses or when using the EF to RF adapter. Kolari initially announced the clip-in filter system for the EOS R system last September.

Now, though, it’s finally here. There are two types of filters available. One fits the EOS R, R5 and R6. The other is for the EOS RP. Both are available in various flavours, designed to work with cameras converted to full-spectrum (seeing both IR and UV, as well as visible light). The filters allow you to cut the range back down to see just the wavelengths you want.

IBIS bug reported in the Canon EOS R5 & R6

Either most Canon EOS R5 owners aren’t as observant as they like to think they are or this might not be as common an issue as some may believe. But at least one EOS R5 owner, who goes by the name juanmaasecas, has spotted what he believes is a bug with the in-body image stabilisation system in the Canon EOS R5.

He posted a video showing how the bug appears and has confirmed that others can reproduce it. Essentially, the issue is that the IBIS has a slight shift as the photo is being taken, causing it to become blurred. Subsequent images in a continuous sequence of shots show a stable, sharp clean image. But that first one always has blur, according to the video.  At least one person commenting on the video reports that the same happens with his EOS R6.

Canon EOS R5 snags first place in Japan camera sales

For a little while, it seemed that both Nikon (with their D5600) and Fuji (with their Fujifilm X-T4 and X100V) were getting some satisfying ranking news. But before they got to rest on their laurels comes a report from Yodobashi Camera, and puts the Canon R5 as the top-selling camera in Japan. Yodobashi Camera is the Japanese B&H and is one of the biggest Japanese consumer electronics outlets.

The report (via getnavi.jp) shares that the Canon R6 only got to 4th place but would have performed better if the stock could meet the demand.

With a lot of the overheating controversy from the video crowd (which Canon has been working on), we have to remember that ultimately the Canon EOS R5 is primarily a stills camera. And it’s a rather good one, too. It has top-notch autofocus that even beats Sony in some aspects and plenty of speed when it comes to shooting.

But how does the ISO stand up in the real world? We’ve seen some tests in more controlled conditions, but out in the wild things can often be a little different. In this video, Lindsay Adler took her EOS R5 out for a spin on the streets of New York to do a night time fashion shoot to see just how well it handles.

This guy liquid-cooled his Canon EOS R5 and beat the 8K overheating issues

The Canon EOS R5, despite receiving firmware update to help reduce the chances of it happening, has a thing for overheating when shooting video. Every single piece of (admittedly, circumstantial) evidence points to it being a timer that’s hard-coded into the camera and not really based on the temperature inside the camera at all. Or is it?

Matt at DIYPerks decided to have a go at liquid cooling his shiny new $3,900 Canon EOS R5. And after doing tests using the original firmware, he saw the results we all expected. The camera shut down right at the time limit, despite being cooled pretty much to the ambient room temperature. When he installed the v1.1 firmware update, though, everything changed.

An underwater review of the Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera

Without a doubt, the Canon EOS R5 is the top image-maker of 2020 and could potentially go unmatched in the camera world for another few years. It is the first full frame mirrorless camera to offer 8K video capability and features a specs sheet that puts it at the top of its class. The EOS R5 directly answers many of the concerns that photographers had with the EOS R and promises significant updates to important functions including autofocus, stabilization, continuous burst shooting, and video.

Despite Sony’s dominance in the underwater camera market over the last year with the A7R IV, it is likely that the Canon EOS R5 will be even more popular as the camera of choice for both underwater photographers and filmmakers.

The Canon Cripple Hammer is pure “conspiracy theory” says Canon director

Johnnie Behiri at CineD recently interviewed Canon Product Management Director of Image Communication Business at Canon Europe (that’s a mouthful!), Katsuyuki Nagai to talk about some fo the EOS R5 and EOS R6 overheating issues – and the limitations imposed on the camera.

Naturally, the topic of whether Canon was intentionally crippling their DSLR and mirrorless cameras so as not to impact their pro cinema line cameras came up. As one would expect, Mr Nagai not only refuted the accusations but said they belong “on the conspiracy theory pile”.

Thermal vision tests suggest Canon may not be able to “fix” the EOS R5’s heat issues

LensRentals just recently posted their teardown of the Canon EOS R5 and noticed that it has some pretty hefty seals to help protect it from the elements when shooting outdoors in harsh conditions. But they theorised that those seals and the tightly packed components might hamper the EOS R5’s heat dissipation abilities.

Well, now, Roger and the team at LensRentals have pointed a FLIR thermal IR camera at it to see exactly how hot the Canon EOS R5 gets after it’s been on for a while at different parts of the camera body. And some of it… Well, it gets extremely hot!

Canon releases major firmware update for EOS R6 to improve overheating (minor R5 update)

Canon has announced new v1.1.1 firmware updates for the EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras. The EOS R5 has already received one firmware update to help improve overheating issues and record times recently, and now it seems some of those improvements have come to the EOS R6 as well.

The major firmware update for the EOS R6 includes a number of bug fixes and improvements, as well as the overheating issue, while the EOS R5 update is fairly minor, just resolving a couple of compatibility issues.

Canon EOS R5 teardown shows great weather sealing but few escape routes for heat

Well, Kolari Vision might’ve been the first to tear apart the Canon EOS R6 and get a good look at the chip that seems to keep time for “overheating” issues, but it looks like Roger and the gang at Lensrentals has beaten them to the punch on cracking open the Canon EOS R5.

They’ve published a complete EOS R5 teardown which offers some good insights into its weather sealing, which looks very impressive. But those seals might be the EOS R5’s downfall when it comes to letting heat escape.
