Watch: Gordon Laing gets up close and personal with Canon’s upcoming EOS R3

The Canon EOS R3 is the hot topic in the Canon camp right now. Development of the new camera was announced in April and Canon’s already teasing us with more information about it with features like oversampled 4K video and new AI-powered vehicle tracking AF for motorsports shooters.

Most of us have only seen photos so far, but Gordon Laing managed to not-quite-get-his-hands-on the real thing. In an in-person briefing by Canon about the new camera, he got to at least see one (well, a pre-production model) up close – even if they wouldn’t let him turn it on and use it, or even touch it.

The Canon EOS R3 shoots oversampled 4K, up to 8 stops of IS and vehicle AF tracking

Canon has teased some more information about the upcoming Canon EOS R3 mirrorless camera. While not expected to ultimately be the highest-end model in Canon’s mirrorless lineup, the EOS R3 is expected to be a pretty high-end camera aimed at sports, wildlife and action shooters as well as photojournalists. And while the majority of its users will no doubt be photographers, it seems it’s no slouch for video, either.

The latest news coming from Canon is that it’ll shoot oversampled 4K video for maximum detail and will offer up to 8 stops of image stabilisation when used in conjunction with a stabilised lens. It will, naturally, feature dual card slots, with one being CFexpress (presumably Type B) and one SD slot (presumably UHS-II).

No, the Canon EOS R3 won’t cost $6,000 – Don’t be silly

Canon Watch is reporting a “rumour” that the Canon EOS R3 have a price that is “below that of the Sony Alpha 1” and “maybe even less than $6,000”. They seem to have been informed that the price for the EOS R3 will be $5,999 – at least at launch and all I have to say to that is… don’t be daft!

The Canon EOS R3 is not going to be a flagship camera, so why would it come with a $6K (I’m rounding up) flagship price tag? Canon Watch doesn’t really believe the price either, saying that it’s “wishful thinking”. I’m not sure who’s wishing it was $6K, though. Are they expecting it to be even more expensive than that?

The Canon EOS R3 stacked sensor is “designed” by Canon but probably not made by them

Well, this is an interesting one. One of the big highlights of the Canon EOS R3 was that out of the various Canon “firsts” it was celebrating, one of them was a brand new Canon BSI stacked CMOS sensor. All of the promotional material from Canon UK even said “designed and manufactured by Canon”. This wording seems to have changed, though.

Now, the wording on the Canon UK website now simply reads that the sensor was “developed by Canon”. And an interview between Russian photography website PhotoWebExpo and Canon Russia’s Head of Product and Consumer Expertise, Andrey Tischenko suggests that while Canon may have designed it, it might just be Sony that’s making it for them.

Canon patents reveal some info about eye-controlled AF coming in the EOS R3

Made famous with 35mm SLR cameras like the EOS 3 and EOS 5 (A2/A2e in the USA), Canon’s eye-controlled autofocus system has been sorely missed by some over the last couple of decades. It never made it into any of their DSLRs, but it seems it will be making a comeback in the recently announced Canon EOS R3 mirrorless camera.

New patents filed by Canon (US 2021/0124239 and US 2021/0125375) have now revealed a little information about how the user will be able to interact with it through the menu system and how you’ll be able to calibrate it. Eye-controlled autofocus wasn’t perfect back in the film days, let’s hope Canon has got it figured out now.

Canon’s EOS R3 mirrorless camera brings back Canon’s Eye Control Autofocus system

Well, that didn’t take long. After yesterday’s leaked photo of the upcoming Canon EOS R3 mirrorless camera, Canon has today officially announced its development. The EOS R3 isn’t the EOS 1DX Mark III replacement, though. According to Canon, it sits somewhere between the EOS R5 and the EOS 1DX Mark III, which means there’s still going to be an EOS R1 on the way at some point.

The new camera is no slouch, though, offering an all-new Canon-developed full-frame stacked BSI CMOS sensor. Canon says this provides “substantially faster read-out speeds during still-image recording” allowing for an impressive 30fps continuous shooting. Oh, and it’s also getting Eye AF back. No, not that one, the one that focuses wherever your eyeball is looking.

Leaked photo suggests Canon 1DX Mark III replacement is the EOS R3 not the EOS R1

Well, this is kinda strange. For a long time, there have been rumours and whispers of an impending mirrorless flagship from Canon to replace the EOS 1DX Mark III. Everybody naturally assumed that it would be called the Canon EOS R1. It turns out, though, that it might actually be the strangely named EOS R3 instead.

Nokishita, who is often right about these sorts of things, has posted an image to Twitter of an EOS R3 mirrorless camera that features a built-in vertical grip. Yes, the kind of grip we’d associate with a flagship body like the 1DX Mark III. They also say that it will be announced soon – at least a development announcement, if not a release.
