It’d take a miracle for you to get a Canon EOS R3 anytime soon

The Canon EOS R3, announced on Tuesday, has proven to be a popular camera. It’s not surprising, really. A lot of EOS 1DX Mark III (and probably Nikon D6) owners have been wanting ot make the jump to mirrorless for a while now, just waiting for a true sports and photojournalism flagship model to come along.

But it’s proven to be so popular that by Thursday, Canon Japan had already posted a statement saying they can’t keep up with the demand. And that’s not the only product they can’t keep up with, either. Pretty much everything else announced along with the EOS R3 and other new releases are also now lagging behind.

Canon has now officially announced the EOS R3 mirrorless camera and yup, it’s $5,999

So, I have to start this post by saying that I was wrong. I really didn’t expect the Canon EOS R3 to come with a $6K price tag at all. I figured it would be closer to something like the Sony A9 II’s $4.5K, but nope. Canon has now officially announced their latest EOS R3 mirrorless camera and it is indeed $5,999. When you look at the specs, though, it sure makes sense.

The new full-frame sports, wildlife and photojournalism flagship from Canon shoots 24.1-megapixel images at up to 30 frames per second (with the electronic shutter), full-width 6K RAW video at up to 60fps and 4K video at up to 120fps as well as bringing back a Canon classic; Eye Control AF. Oh, yeah, and it also has a flippy out LCD.

Canon EOS R3 added to Canon’s product list – Announcement this month with new lenses and accessories

Well, we all expected the Canon EOS R3 to be announced at some point this month and it looks like that might be true after Nokishita tweeted that the EOS R3 along with a number of accessories has been added to Canon’s latest product list. As well as the EOS R3 camera, two new RF mount lenses are also expected in the announcement, including a 100-400mm zoom and a 16mm f/2.8 ultra-wide.

Olympics photography workflow: Going through 2000 images to deliver 25 selections asap

I was joking with someone yesterday about the craziness of the Olympics, and the pressures that we are all under during the Games. We were talking about how the world has different time zones and maybe they should add another just for the Olympics. For the media here, there is absolutely no consistency to our eating and sleeping patterns and time is just different. When a bus is 10 minutes late at home, it usually is no big deal, but here at the Olympics, when you are under deadlines all the time, ten minutes seems like an eternity. And those deadlines can be really daunting.

When I first photographed the Olympics, there really was no such thing as social media and the deadlines were in the hours, not the minutes. I remember being in Beijing and people were saying, take your time getting us images because it is still in the middle of the night back home. But those days are long gone, and we live in a world of immediacy. The team does not want to wait for hours to get my photos, they want them as quick as I can deliver them. And I am not alone in this. The media here are either working for entities that expect images right away, or they are freelance and competing to get their images picked up by the different news outlets around the world, therefore earning them an income.

Leaked EXIF data from Tokyo Olympics confirms Canon EOS R3 will be 24-megapixel

It seems to be kind of an open secret that the Canon EOS R3 is currently being tested at the Tokyo Olympics. Obviously, those who have one can’t come right out and say that they do, nor can they release any specifications about the camera. However, it seems that images from the camera have managed to find their way out into the wild with EXIF data still intact.

That EXIF data, with screenshots originally posted to the Canon Rumors forums, reveals some more information about the upcoming camera that’s not yet been released by Canon. Finally, if the screenshots of the EXIF data are to be believed, we know the resolution of the Canon EOS R3.

Photographing the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic opening ceremony with the Canon EOS R3 (maybe)

[A little while back, we caught our friend Jeff Cable’s post about him getting the Canon EOS R3. This is very exciting news for anyone who is waiting for a possible Canon R3 announcement in September. Jeff could absolutely not confirm if he even took the camera with him to the Tokyo Olympics, so the title is 100% my educated guess. Anyways, for anybody out there who likes Photography, sports, and the Olympics, Jeff’s blog is a must. This is it from your friendly editor, it is all Jeff from now]

Two nights ago was the long-awaited Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (and yes, they still call it that even though we are in 2021). In some ways, it was like all the other openings I have done in the past, and in other ways, it was completely different.

The first major difference, of course, was that there were no spectators in the audience. But we were still required to be in our photo positions hours in advance and not allowed to move around the stadium at all. Normally we are packed in to our sections, but this time there was a seat in between each of us. I have to admit, I liked that part since it gave me room to have my equipment spread out around me. I always shoot with two cameras at these events, one with a long zoom (in this case the Canon 200-400mm) and one wide lens (this time I used the new Canon RF 15-35mm) for the firework shots.

Canon EOS R3 announcement expected in September, Nikon Z9 in November/December

Well, it looks like Canon’s going to beat Nikon to the punch when it comes to a mirrorless flagship camera. Canon Rumors and Nikon Rumors are reporting that the upcoming Canon EOS R3 and Nikon Z9 mirrorless cameras are going to be officially announced in September and December respectively.

There’s no word on exactly when in September and December the cameras will be announced, but the earlier date for the Canon EOS R3 makes sense as I’ve already seen at least one Olympics photographer posting that they have one to take with them.

Canon to announce the EOS R3 mirrorless camera tomorrow… or maybe just another teaser

There are reports that Canon is going to announce the upcoming EOS R3 mirrorless camera on June 29th, 2021. Yes, tomorrow. Canon Rumors initially reported the news, but now say they’ve received some information that it might just be another teaser.

The latter makes more sense, as Canon said they would be releasing more information between the initial development announcement and the final official announcement and, well, they’ve not released any new info since that development announcement yet. There’s also no word on an official announcement from the other usual sources for such information.

No, Sony is not making the Canon EOS R3 Sensor – Canon is

Well, it turns out that Canon is making their own sensor for the Canon EOS R3 after all. After a wording change on various Canon websites last month suggested that it was designed by them but manufactured by somebody else – possibly Sony – Canon has done something they almost never do. They’ve publicly addressed a rumour.

As well as the wording change, an interview with Canon Russia’s Head of Product and Consumer Expertise, Andrey Tischenko by Russian photography website PhotoWebExpo points out that the first Canon camera to contain a stacked sensor was the G7X Mark III – which contains a Sony sensor. But now Canon has confirmed that no, Sony isn’t making the EOS R3 sensor. They are.
