Canon confirms EOS R1 flagship on the way (eventually)

While Canon seems to have abandoned plans for an EOS R5 Mark II – at least for now – it hasn’t forgotten about creating a new flagship. Rumours about a hypothetical Canon EOS R1 have been around for years. While many thought the EOS R3 would become the new Canon flagship mirrorless camera, Canon has denied that this is the case. But we are still waiting for Canon to announce the EOS R1.

In an interview with Phototrend at CP+ 2023, though, Canon has said they haven’t forgotten about the EOS R1. Although there’s been no solid release date – or even a vague release date – Canon says it’s in development and will be coming… eventually. I suspect we may not hear even a hint of an announcement until either the very end of this year or early next year in anticipation of the 2024 Olympics.

Canon’s EOS R1 flagship mirrorless camera not expected to arrive until late 2023

Well, if this turns out to be true (which is more than likely), it’s a shame but not much of a surprise. Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon’s not-officially-announced-but-pretty-much-inevitable flagship camera, the Canon EOS R1 is not expected to come “anytime soon” and that a retailer has actually been told not to expect it until the second half of 2023.

When it is eventually announced, it will be the official replacement for the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III, a true flagship model. Even though many people see the Canon EOS R3 as the 1DX Mark III successor, Canon has stated that the EOS R3 is definitely not a flagship camera. Given the specs of the EOS R3, it will be very interesting to see exactly what the EOS R1 offers when it’s eventually announced, but it’s not happening yet.

There have been rumours for a while now about a new ultra-high megapixel mirrorless Canon camera being released. It’s now looking highly likely that this will be the case, with a launch of a 100MP RF mount camera in the first half of 2023.

At the moment it’s still conjecture, and no one knows which camera line it will be following. There’s speculation that it could be a mirrorless equivalent of the EOS 5DS or indeed it could be the much-anticipated successor to the EOS R, the R1.

Leaked photo suggests Canon 1DX Mark III replacement is the EOS R3 not the EOS R1

Well, this is kinda strange. For a long time, there have been rumours and whispers of an impending mirrorless flagship from Canon to replace the EOS 1DX Mark III. Everybody naturally assumed that it would be called the Canon EOS R1. It turns out, though, that it might actually be the strangely named EOS R3 instead.

Nokishita, who is often right about these sorts of things, has posted an image to Twitter of an EOS R3 mirrorless camera that features a built-in vertical grip. Yes, the kind of grip we’d associate with a flagship body like the 1DX Mark III. They also say that it will be announced soon – at least a development announcement, if not a release.

The first rumoured specs for the Canon EOS R1 flagship read more like a wish list

With Sony’s recent release of the Sony A1, the DSLR big shots are playing catch up again. Nikon has confirmed that a Z mirrorless flagship camera to beat the D6 is on the way at some point this year. But what about Canon? While they don’t appear to have admitted anything publicly yet, “EOS R1” rumours to replace the 1DX line have been popping up quite regularly.

Canon is expected to make an announcement about it that’s a bit more official at some point this year, but for now we appear to have a possible specs leak – although, they do seem pretty insane and far-fetched.

Canon expected to face production & release delays due to new Japan coronavirus restrictions

We were already expecting delays from Nikon due to the state of emergency declared in Japan by its prime minister, Yoshihide Suga in response to the recent surge in coronavirus infections, but with the restrictions set to expand to more areas, we might be seeing delays from Canon, too, including their 2021 gear release schedule.

Canon Rumors is reporting that a number of sources have told them that Canon’s roadmap has changed quite significantly due to the new restrictions. Just last week, they spoke of at least 8 new Canon cameras expected in 2021, but now the timescales for release of those cameras look like they might be shifted.

Canon killing their DSLRs? – mirrorless 1DX Mark III replacement rumoured for 2021

Rumours of a mirrorless 1DX level body have been around for a while. Since before the 1DX Mark III development was even announced, actually. But now according to a new report on Canon Rumors, it looks like it might actually be on the cards for 2021. They say that Canon “will definitely be announcing an RF mount mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III in 2021”.

Whether that means, a literal mirrorless version with pretty much the same specs and features or to replace what would be the EOS 1DX Mark IV is unknown, although it’s set to come in the second half of the year. CR has nicknamed it the “EOS R1” which I think would be appropriate, given the D1/D1X lineage.
