Canon confirms EOS M system is not dead after all

Last month, when Canon announced the EOS R50, the world (including us here at DIYP) thought this was the final nail in the coffin for Canon’s EOS M APS-C mirrorless camera system. It’s been dying for a few years, with little-to-no updates and not really any word from Canon about what was happening with it. And the EOS R50 does look very much like an EOS M50 Mark II successor.

It appears, though, that the assumption was wrong. In the recent interview with Photo Trend at CP+ 2023 – the same one where Canon confirmed the EOS R1 was in development – they quite clearly stated that the EOS M system is not dead. At least, not as far as they’re concerned.

Fully geared cinema rigs can run into the tens of thousands of dollars depending on what you’re putting into them. But what if you could build something for around $2,000, including the cost of the camera itself?

In this video, Chadwin Smith takes a look at the humble Canon EOS M50. At its launch, the EOS M50 looked like a very promising camera except for the fact that there was a substantial crop when shooting 4K video, but if you can live with that, then it makes for an ideal inexpensive camera for shooting video.

Impending EOS M50 Mark II is confirmed and latest specs leak shows no IBIS

Despite rumours that Canon is planning to kill off their APS-C EOS M mirrorless camera product line, the impending release of the Canon EOS M50 Mark II has been confirmed according to Nokishita, who tweeted a few days ago that it’s been added to Canon’s latest product list.

There have been rumours about an M50 Mark II for a little while now, but so far we hadn’t seen any solid specs. Now, Canon Rumors is reporting a new specs leak that looks pretty enticing for EOS M shooters – and potentially a worthy replacement for the dead EOS 7D DSLR series for some photographers.

Is Canon announcing a new flagship EOS-M7 APS-C mirrorless camera in 2020?

With 2020 rapidly approaching Q4, there isn’t much time left for manufacturers to announce new cameras this year. But with the pace at which new ones have been announced over the last few months, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were a few more yet to come. And according to a report on Canon Rumors, it looks like there are.

CR says that they’ve received multiple reports over the last few months that a pair of EOS M cameras are coming in 2020, and recently they’ve received some information on what these cameras may be. According to the rumour, we can expect the EOS-M50 Mark II and a new EOS-M7 flagship model.

Canon to follow up the EOS M50 with a Mark II update in 2020

Canon’s popular EOS M50 was released only a couple of years ago, and we spoke with Canon about it when we were at The Photography Show back in 2018. But now it looks like we might see an EOS M50 Mark II coming at some point this year. Or, at least an announcement.

Canon Rumors reports that there’s a higher-end APS-C camera coming to Canon’s mirrorless lineup and they’ve been told that it will be an EOS M50 successor. But while the announcement may come this year, it may only be for Japan right now. The rest of the world might not see it until 2021.

Canon EOS R5, R6 take first sellers in B&H despite stock issues and heating concerns

If you thought that the Canon EOS R5 will take a beating for its heating issues, think again. The R5 just won top seller over at B&H, and is ranked as the #1 seller in the mirrorless category. The second and third in line are EOS R6, and Sony A7III which held the first position for a very long time is now only ranked in the third spot.

[note: if you look at the B&H site via mobile Canon EOS M50 and Sony a6100 hold places 3 and 4, I suspect that it has more to do with their usage as streaming cameras and not with those bodies being used for actual shooting, but we will have to see what happens to sales once COVID-19 goes away. More on that below]

Left-eyed shooters are apparently upset with Canon over the EOS RP

I’m a left-eyed shooter. I’ve just come to accept the fact that my LCD screen’s (assuming digital) gonna get covered in nose sweat and other crap when I shoot. It’s a pain, but I’ve dealt with it for 20 years, and I’ll just keep on dealing with it. One thing I haven’t had to deal with so far, though, is a camera with a touchscreen LCD.

Photographer and YouTuber, Michael Andrew has strong feelings about it, though. He feels that left-eyed shooters are hindered by touchscreen issues when shooting the Canon EOS RP, causing it to throw off your autofocus point and miss a lot of shots. But it’s not just the EOS RP he has a problem with. He’s also seen this issue with the EOS R, EOS M50 and the Sony A6400.

When the Canon EOS M50 was first announced in February it looked quite intriguing. So we went over to the Canon stand during The Photography Show to check it out and have a bit of a chat. The EOS M50 is primarily aimed at beginners looking for a simple camera with powerful features. But it’s also ideal as a second, smaller camera for those shooting Canon DSLRs.

WPPI has been a good one this year for gear announcements. We’ve got the very impressive looking new Sony A7III camera and a whole slew of new E-Mount Art series lenses from Sigma. A couple of new entry level bodies from Canon as well as the new EOS M50 mirrorless. We’ve also seen a new AD200 competitor appear from Cactus who say it’s only just the beginning. Oh yeah, and then there’s that funny robotic speedlight from Canon.

There were a few items we didn’t cover, though. So, let’s have a look at everything that was announced. All the stuff we told you about and all the stuff we didn’t in one place.

Canon’s new EOS M50 Mirrorless is finally official

There’s been a fair bit of talk about Canon’s new EOS M50 mirrorless camera, from secret meetings to image leaks, and then specs. But now it’s finally official. Announced today, the Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera is here, and the specs are confirmed and final.

It’s nice to finally see some of the rumours squashed, and a couple confirmed. It also ends any speculation as to whether or not Canon were bringing back the eye-ball scanning autofocus viewfinder systems of the EOS5/A2e. They didn’t. It does look like Canon may have finally hit on the perfect combination of specs and stats to make the ideal vlogging camera, though.
