Canon EOS M50 Mark II

Canon confirms EOS M system is not dead after all

Last month, when Canon announced the EOS R50, the world (including us here at DIYP) thought this was the final nail in the coffin for Canon’s EOS M APS-C mirrorless camera system. It’s been dying for a few years, with little-to-no updates and not really any word from Canon about what was happening with it. And the EOS R50 does look very much like an EOS M50 Mark II successor.

It appears, though, that the assumption was wrong. In the recent interview with Photo Trend at CP+ 2023 – the same one where Canon confirmed the EOS R1 was in development – they quite clearly stated that the EOS M system is not dead. At least, not as far as they’re concerned.

It looks like the Canon EOS M system’s death knell is ringing loud and clear. After discontinuing the Canon EOS M200 only last week, the final remaining camera in the EOS M lineup is also on its way out. It appears that the Canon EOS M50 Mark II, released only in 2020, has now been partially discontinued at Canon Japan.

Asobinet reports that the Canon Kiss M2 (that’s what Canon Japan calls the EOS M50 Mark II) body-only kit is now listed as discontinued on Canon Japan’s website. They say that the two kits containing lenses have not yet been discontinued. As of right now, though, Canon’s online store also lists the Kiss M2 and EF-M 15-45mm IS STM kit lens package is also discontinued.

When you’re just getting started in photography and you know nothing about the gear, choosing which camera to buy is a challenge. There are so many out there these days and they all offer a range of unique and confusing features that might better suit a different kind of user or type of photography. So, we’ve picked nine of the best mirrorless cameras that don’t cost a fortune but will allow you to grow and develop as your photography needs expand.

We’ve set the spending limit at $1,000 for this list, although some of the cameras here are significantly less expensive than that. Do bear in mind, that with the global silicon shortage, some of these cameras may be easier to acquire than others at the moment, but we’ve tried to pick ones that still seem quite readily available where possible.

Canon announces the EOS M50 Mark II – Still has a 4K crop and no IBIS

Canon has today announced the new EOS M50 Mark II mirrorless camera. Not much appears to have changed on the outside between the original Canon EOS M50 although it’s had a few significant enhancements on the inside, including improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF (but not for 4K) and Eye Detection AF.

For vloggers, there’s a new vertical shooting mode, and it now has a clean HDMI output signal for when you want to feed into a capture device on your computer for live streaming – although it’s also compatible with Canon’s webcam software. But it still has no IBIS and, it still has that crop when shooting 4K video.

Despite rumours that Canon is planning to kill off their APS-C EOS M mirrorless camera product line, the impending release of the Canon EOS M50 Mark II has been confirmed according to Nokishita, who tweeted a few days ago that it’s been added to Canon’s latest product list.

There have been rumours about an M50 Mark II for a little while now, but so far we hadn’t seen any solid specs. Now, Canon Rumors is reporting a new specs leak that looks pretty enticing for EOS M shooters – and potentially a worthy replacement for the dead EOS 7D DSLR series for some photographers.

Could these be the specs to the Canon 7D Mark II’s EOS M mirrorless successor?

Not much has really happened with Canon’s EOS M system since they went full frame with the EOS R, despite Canon saying that they’re committed to both formats. There have been rumours about new ones coming this year, although there’s still been no solid news as of yet and we’re 2/3rds of the way through 2020 already. Then there’s the reported death of the EOS 7D DSLR line.

Well, a new set of specs has just appeared on Canon Rumors, which they say may be for an upcoming EOS M50 Mark II or “an M camera above the EOS M6 Mark II”. Could these possibly be the specs for the mythical EOS M7? The rumoured mirrorless replacement for the EOS 7D Mark II DSLR?

Is Canon announcing a new flagship EOS-M7 APS-C mirrorless camera in 2020?

With 2020 rapidly approaching Q4, there isn’t much time left for manufacturers to announce new cameras this year. But with the pace at which new ones have been announced over the last few months, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were a few more yet to come. And according to a report on Canon Rumors, it looks like there are.

CR says that they’ve received multiple reports over the last few months that a pair of EOS M cameras are coming in 2020, and recently they’ve received some information on what these cameras may be. According to the rumour, we can expect the EOS-M50 Mark II and a new EOS-M7 flagship model.

Canon to follow up the EOS M50 with a Mark II update in 2020

Canon’s popular EOS M50 was released only a couple of years ago, and we spoke with Canon about it when we were at The Photography Show back in 2018. But now it looks like we might see an EOS M50 Mark II coming at some point this year. Or, at least an announcement.

Canon Rumors reports that there’s a higher-end APS-C camera coming to Canon’s mirrorless lineup and they’ve been told that it will be an EOS M50 successor. But while the announcement may come this year, it may only be for Japan right now. The rest of the world might not see it until 2021.

Two new Canon EOS M cameras rumoured for release in 2020

Despite the introduction of the full-frame EOS R and EOS RP cameras, Canon isn’t giving up on its APS-C line of EOS M bodies, as evidenced by the release of the EOS M6 Mark II and the EOS M200. Rumour has it, though, that there are a couple of new ones expected to be released during 2020.

At this early stage, the specs need to be taken with a grain of salt, but one is suggested to be a Mark II successor to the EOS M50 (or perhaps a new M60), while the name of the other is currently unknown.
