Watch this complete guide to Canon EOS M system lenses before they’re all killed off

The timing of the release of this particular video from Christopher Frost is curious, but release it he has. It’s a complete guide to every EF-M lens made for the Canon EOS M system from brands such as Canon themselves, Sigma, Viltrox, Samyang and Laowa. The reason the timing is a little odd is that Canon seems to be preparing to completely kill off the EOS M system at any time.

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II has been discontinued, with no signs of a replacement and two new “RF-M” mount APS-C bodies are expected to be announced at some point soon – possibly on May 24th. But that might mean that the used market is about to get flooded with EOS M gear. So, maybe now is the perfect time to brush up on what lenses are out there for anybody looking for a potential bargain.

If there’s one annoying aspect of cameras, particularly mirrorless cameras that are constantly powering an LCD or EVF the whole time they’re turned on, it’s battery life. There are grips you can get for some cameras to let you take advantage of multiple batteries or you can go with external power, but not all cameras.

Frustrated with battery life, a tinkerer going by the name “funkster“, decided that the most practical option for his Canon EOS M mirrorless camera was to build his own grip. It lets him use a pair of commonly available 18650 batteries and he even made them hot-swappable so that he can replace one of the batteries when it gets low without the camera losing power.

Despite the introduction of the full-frame EOS R and EOS RP cameras, Canon isn’t giving up on its APS-C line of EOS M bodies, as evidenced by the release of the EOS M6 Mark II and the EOS M200. Rumour has it, though, that there are a couple of new ones expected to be released during 2020.

At this early stage, the specs need to be taken with a grain of salt, but one is suggested to be a Mark II successor to the EOS M50 (or perhaps a new M60), while the name of the other is currently unknown.

It’s been rumoured, hinted and hoped that IBIS would be coming to the Canon EOS R mirrorless lineup at some point, and now Canon Image Communication Business Operations Group Executive, Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, has confirmed that IBIS is is something they’re working on for future models in an interview with Amateur Photographer at CP+ 2019.

They’ve also reaffirmed Canon’s decision to not kill off the EOS M mirrorless system or mount. The M mount will be for lightweight APS-C cameras and lenses, while the RF will be for their full frame mirrorless system.

If you are a fan of Magic Lantern, you know that this piece of software can greatly enhance video on Canon cameras. Why shouldn’t you be a fan, it can give your 5dmkIII 4K raw?). But now, Magic Lantern is reported to enabling 5K RAW on the (older, $150 on Amazon)  Canon EOS M. (see the ML post here)

If you take a look at the screens below, you’ss see that there is now a new option for 5K 3×1 24FPS recording. 5K, stands for 5K footage, 3×1 stands for 3 pixels binning and 24 is the FPS, not bad for a sub $150 camera.

Magic Lantern lets the original Canon EOS M shoot 2.5K RAW video

The original Canon EOS M mirrorless camera from 2013, the camera summarily dismissed by pretty much everybody as a pretty terrible camera, can now shoot 2.5K RAW video. Sort of. It’s all thanks to a new sd_uhs module in Magic Lantern which overclocks the write speed of the SD card.

It’s definitely a case of “Don’t try this at home!” unless you know what you’re doing or are willing to accept the risks, though. There have been reports of SD cards dying, and Magic Lantern currently doesn’t recommend its use. But it’s still available, and if it doesn’t kill anything lets you shoot 12Bit lossless 2.35:1 raw video.
