Canon EOS 6D is the most commonly used camera for astrophotography according to RMG shortlist

The Royal Museums Greenwich Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition is one of the highlights of the astrophotography calendar and one of the world’s most prestigious awards for this particular subject matter. In July, they released the shortlisted images and announced the winners just over a week ago.

The list of equipment used to shoot the shortlisted images was released and analysed by the folks over at Skies and Scopes. It shows some surprising results. Nikon, as a brand, is in the lead – possibly not surprisingly – although the actual camera body that popped up most often in the list was the original Canon EOS 6D – by a rather wide margin.

New Canon EOS R6 specs leak shows a mirrorless 6D Mark II with 4K60 video, IBIS and dual card slots

With the exception of the coronavirus, the photography world is glued to news of Canon’s upcoming EOS R5 – essentially the mirrorless continuation of Canon’s popular EOS 5D DSLR line. But Canon is also working on an EOS R6, which looks set to replace the EOS 6D DSLR product line – which will presumably end with the 6D Mark II.

EOS R6 talk has been a little quiet for a while, but a few new specs about the camera have been leaked via Canon Rumors. The new specs add to those from a couple of months ago, and offer a little more insight into what we can expect.

From Canon to Sony: what I learned four years after switching systems

I switched to Sony from Canon on December 31, 2014.

Since then, I’ve cranked through over 50,000 frames on my Sony cameras in the past 4+ years of shooting.

I upgraded to the A7 III in October 2018, following a brief stint where I considered a switch to Fujifilm or Olympus.

So now’s a good time to take a look back at the pluses — and minuses —  of my switch to Sony from Canon.

85mm lenses aren’t just for portraits as this foggy landscape challenge shows

When we think of shooting landscapes, typically it’s with pretty wide lenses. Most landscape photographers I know rarely shoot with anything that isn’t at least as wide as a 24mm on a full frame body. But does that mean you have to only shoot landscapes with a wide angle lens? In this video, Toma Bonciu challenges himself to shoot landscapes with an 85mm lens, typically used more for portraits, and the results are pretty spectacular.

Watch a timelapse of craftsman replacing a Canon 6D shutter

Have you ever wondered what it looks like when a technician repairs your camera? This timelapse will answer the question what happens when a shutter is being replaced. While it’s purely technical, it’s mesmerizing to watch. Not to mention I’m in awe when I see how many tiny, fragile parts the technician needs to deal with and leave them unharmed. In particular this case, the guy is working with Canon 6D. But I imagine it’s equally demanding with all DLSRs.

Mesmerizing lucid dreams photos and how to create them

Last year I attended Midburn, a regional burning man event taking place in the hot Israeli desert.

I filmed nonstop for five days and created “We are Midburn”. The video ended up getting featured multiple big websites and news outlets, including the official Burning Man newsletter. Creating the video was quite the journey, but it also required me to extensively film non-stop during the entire event. So I pretty much experienced everything through a dusty camera lens.

When it was time to get ready for Midburn 2017, I decided I’ll hold off the video this year. I wanted to be more present in the event, and it wasn’t possible if I was to create a video. But I did have an idea to try something that has intrigued me for quite a while, and this year’s Midburn “Lucid Dream” theme was the perfect setting.

10 reasons why this photographer switched from Canon to Sony

I know, I get it, you’re sick of all the “why I switched” posts, already. But, photographer Francisco Hernandez has some pretty compelling reasons for his switch from the Canon 6D to the Sony A7RII. Of course, the reason why anybody switches to or even initially chooses a particular brand or body are often personal reasons. They don’t apply to everybody.

So it follows then that some of Francisco’s reasons won’t apply to you, either. But, they’re still valid points. If they are things that you’ve been concerned about with your current system, such videos help you make decisions. No matter what camera system you might consider buying into, it’s a big expense. So, it’s a topic that one really can’t see too many opinions on.

This is why your night sky photography sucked last night

It’s why mine always suck, too. Light pollution. It’s hard to escape it these days. It’s the thing that puts many budding astrophotographers off before they’ve really  even got started. This video from Sriram Murali puts things into context.

Filmed mostly in California, this short shows how the night sky changes as you get further from the city lights. Sriram uses the Bortle Scale, which ranks skies from 1-9 in order of darkness. 1 is the deepest darkest sky, while 9 is the inner city sky.

It’s really not, but I feel like the potential for a flame-war and s–t storm is so great that I have to put on a raincoat just to start laying out the words haha!

That’s right my friends, today I’m going to be talking about the Sony A7ii and why I’ve decided to ditch my entire Canon system (including a 6D & an 85mm 1.2) for a Sony setup with older manual only lenses (though I do have one modern 85mm).

Police Officer Spends His Vacation Creating Awesome Timelapse Of Severe Weather

Working full time as a police officer in California, photography started as just a hobby for Jeff Boyce. Though he’s been interested in taking photos for the past couple of years, it wasn’t until this year that Boyce was ready to take on the daunting world of time lapse. Two weeks ago, Boyce released one of his first attempts at the art form and, boy, did he knock it out of the park.

Combining his love for storm chasing–a hobby picked up in 2014–and his love for photography, Boyce took a 5-week long break from his duties as an officer to travel around the country capturing timelapse of some wicked intense weather. Boyce had no plans as he pulled out of his driveway, embarking on the journey. Rather, he frequently checked the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center for an indication on where he should be heading. Boyce said on some days he would travel upwards of 600 miles just to get where the action may or may not happen. Needless to say, there wasn’t a lot of sleep happening on this trip.[Read More…]
