Canon to finally release an ultra-high-resolution 5DS/5DSR mirrorless replacement

When Canon released the EOS 5DS and 5DSR in 2015, they kinda blew everything away when it came to high-resolution cameras. The only things that could really compete with them at the time were the Nikon D810 (36-megapixel) and expensive digital medium format cameras if you needed that kind of resolution. A replacement model has been rumoured for a long time, and now it seems one might finally be coming.

Canon Rumors is reporting what they feel is a credible rumour that Canon is finally coming out with a new RF mount 75-megapixel mirrorless camera. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise, given how proud Canon was of the 5DS/5DSR and that “highest resolution DSLR” title. I’m just amazed that it’s taken this long.

The Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R DSLRs have just had an insane $2,400 price drop

The two high-resolution 50-megapixel Canon DSLRs, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R are still very respectable cameras, despite having been released way back in early 2015. They weren’t cheap cameras, either, launching at $3,699 and $3,899. That regular retail price still stands today. Or at least, it did. Right now B&H is listing the EOS 5DS for $1,299 and the EOS 5DS R for $1,499.

Yes, you read that right. That’s a $2,400 discount from their regular retail price. I don’t know if they’ve put these offers up just to compete with Amazon Prime Day, or everybody’s just trying to unload stock in anticipation of a super high res RF mount camera that would destroy their value anyway. But if you want one, better hurry!

Canon’s high resolution (90-MP?) EOS R mirrorless camera being field tested, report says

Last week, it was reported that the high-resolution 50-megapixel Canon EOS 5DS and 5DSR DSLRs had ceased production. While Canon still hasn’t confirmed this, and you can still currently buy one, it makes a lot of sense to kill off this camera now, with 40+ megapixels starting to become more common with the likes of the Nikon D850 & Z7 and Sony A7R IV.

There have been rumours of a super-high-resolution Canon EOS R mirrorless camera for quite a while now, but we haven’t heard much lately. Now, though, Canon Rumors is reporting that such a camera is being tested with select photographers.

Production of the Canon EOS 5DS & 5DSR has stopped, report claims

According to a report on Canon Rumors, production of the high-resolution Canon DSLRs, the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DSR has ended. There’s been no confirmation from Canon yet, and it’s still listed as a current model on both the Canon USA and Canon Japan websites, and a stop in production doesn’t necessarily mean “Discontinued” just yet, but Canon Rumors says they’ve heard this from multiple sources now.

Canon patents a new 83-megapixel full frame sensor

A new Canon patent has been discovered by the folks at Canon News. It describes an 83-megapixel sensor which, if the maths are right, will have the same pixel pitch as the 32.5-megapixel sensor in the recently announced Canon EOS 90D. Sony’s 61-megapixel A7R IV caused quite the splash when it was announced, becoming the highest resolution full-frame camera out there. Canon’s ageing 50-megapixel 5DS and 5DSR bodies were the previous champions, but they’re getting a little long in the tooth. According to a report on Canon Rumors, though, Canon is preparing to reclaim the throne with an 80+ megapixel EOS R body.

Canon 5DSR vs Huawei P20Pro Smartphone. I’m somewhat stunned…

This is the new Huawei P20 Pro smartphone, which boasts what the manufacturers claim is the best ever smartphone camera. Actually, a combination of three sensors with individual lenses, a 40 megapixel (yes!) 1/1.7 inch colour sensor (significantly larger than the 1/2.9 sensor in the iPhone X), a 20 megapixel monochrome sensor (both these sensors are approximately equivalent to a full-frame 27mm lens) and a 8 megapixel 80mm equivalent lens for zooming.

When the 36MP Nikon D800 was originally released in 2012, it was hailed as the “medium format killer”. Well, medium format has not only survived, but seems to be thriving. Sometimes we complain about how our cameras function. Even if we are not doing so out loud, there is this voice in our heads that says “If only the ISO could go higher…” or “If only the card was faster…” or “If only the camera was lighter…”. And this is OK. Or course, those complaints get a different perspective once you take a look at where digital camera were only 15 years ago.

Photographer Jim Goldstein of All Things Photo did us a service. He took the 1998 Canon D2000 and put it head to head (and shot to shot) against Canon’s current lo-and-behold 2015 Canon 5DSR.
