Canon EOS 1D X Mark III

Canon is adding vehicle-tracking AF to the EOS R5 and R6 but it comes with a catch

One of the great new features of the Canon EOS R3 (and the Nikon Z9, while we’re talking about it) was the addition of vehicle tracking. Designed primarily for sports shooters covering motor racing, it allows the camera to lock onto vehicles as they hurl themselves around the track at ungodly speeds. Well, that feature is coming to the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 on December 2nd via a firmware update.

It has a small problem, though. According to Canon, “general passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles may not be detected”. There’s no indication as to why, but it seems that non-racing vehicles “may not” be detected. This is perhaps going to be a little tricky for motorcycles, given that street bikes and racing bikes are pretty much identical to each other, especially in Superbike racing where production bikes are used.

The balance of the camera and why it matters

While the broad strokes of what is wanted on a camera usually revolve around the imaging fundamentals (resolution, ISO performance, AF, etc), there are some functions of camera design which have significant impact on creating that often can be overlooked. The aspect that I want to discuss today is that of balance.

By balance, I am talking about how the chassis works together with the lens in a way that makes creating more fluid to the photographer. To be honest, this was an issue that hadn’t been on my mind all that much over the years, as I mostly shot camera bodies that had a built in vertical grip or were medium format and therefore larger. However, with the emerging dominance of mirrorless bodies, size and weight have come under so much scrutiny, and that has been at a cost of balance.

Canon EOS R6 and 1DX Mark III get C-Log 3 and dual-card recording in new firmware

Canon has released a pair of new firmware updates for the Canon EOS R6 and the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III. And while the features they bring aren’t unexpected for a camera like the 1DX Mark III, they’re a welcome surprise for the EOS R6 that seems to be Canon announcing that the EOS R6 is classed as a serious professional camera.

While both firmware updates contain fixes for their respective bodies, both of them add two new features to both cameras. First, they get the ability to shoot video in Canon Log 3, but now they’re also both able to shoot video to two cards simultaneously, letting you make your backups as you go.

Canon killing their DSLRs? – mirrorless 1DX Mark III replacement rumoured for 2021

Rumours of a mirrorless 1DX level body have been around for a while. Since before the 1DX Mark III development was even announced, actually. But now according to a new report on Canon Rumors, it looks like it might actually be on the cards for 2021. They say that Canon “will definitely be announcing an RF mount mirrorless version of the EOS-1D X Mark III in 2021”.

Whether that means, a literal mirrorless version with pretty much the same specs and features or to replace what would be the EOS 1DX Mark IV is unknown, although it’s set to come in the second half of the year. CR has nicknamed it the “EOS R1” which I think would be appropriate, given the D1/D1X lineage.

Testing the ISO of Canon EOS R5 and R6 vs 1DX Mark III and 5D Mark IV

Whenever Canon comes out with new cameras, one of my most important real-world tests is determining how clean the images look at higher ISOs. I am not testing this for scientific reasons, I am doing this test because I shoot in low light quite often and want the highest quality images for my clients. I also thought that you and the rest of the world might be interested in this as well.

Many people get caught up in the number of megapixels that a camera has on its sensor, thinking that the more the better. What people may not know is that the more megapixels they cram onto a sensor, and the closer that those pixels are to each other, the more heat build-up occurs. This increase in heat can ultimately also increase the digital noise (graininess) in our photos.

My Canon EOS 1D X Mark III real world review

As many of you know, I have been lucky enough to have a Canon EOS 1DX Mark III in my possession for more than a month now. People have been asking me to review this new top-of-the-line camera, but I really wanted to put it through it’s paces in order to do a fair review.

There are lots of photographers or tech reviewers who write reviews of a new product, basically looking at the spec sheets, or holding it in their hands for a couple of minutes. But in my mind, there is no better way to review a product than to use it as my primary camera for a while and really get to know it in detail.

Now that I have become pretty familiar with the ins and outs of this camera, it is time to share my findings with all of you.

Canon says a firmware is on the way to fix 1DX Mark III lock-up issues – offers temporary workaround

Recently, a number of users have reported that the Canon 1DX Mark III will lock up under certain (often mystifying) conditions. Canon seems to have at least figured out what’s causing the issue now, though, even if they haven’t managed to resolve it yet.

From Canon’s description of the problem, it all boils down to the electronic level indicator. For now, the recommended advice is simply to disable it, although Canon has said that a new firmware update is on the way, planned for release in early April, to resolve the issue completely.

Canon 1D X Mark III OVF freezes in burst mode, some users report

The long-awaited Canon 1DX Mark III was announced earlier this year, and first-hand impressions are coming in. Sadly, not all of them are positive, considering that some users have been experiencing problems with their camera. According to reports from several users, the OVF in their camera freezes mid-shoot during burst mode.

A pair of white papers have been released by Canon exploring the new Canon 1DX Mark III DSLR. The two white papers cover its stills and video capabilities and come in at 59 and 21 pages long respectively. They go into a lot of detail about the overall performance, burst rates, autofocus, metering and flash, image quality, full-frame 4K, 5.5K RAW, the codecs used and more.
