Canon has discontinued a bunch of DSLR lenses over the past year or so. And now, the company seems more determined than ever to switch to mirrorless and stay in that area.

Judging from a recent report, the company has come down to only nine EF-mount lenses, which is certainly not great news for Canon DSLR users.

I switched to Sony from Canon on December 31, 2014.

Since then, I’ve cranked through over 50,000 frames on my Sony cameras in the past 4+ years of shooting.

I upgraded to the A7 III in October 2018, following a brief stint where I considered a switch to Fujifilm or Olympus.

So now’s a good time to take a look back at the pluses — and minuses —  of my switch to Sony from Canon.

Let’s start with something you need to hear if you are thinking of switching camera system:

Canon has killed off the EOS 7D series, report says

Recently, word of a newly certified Canon DC126801 32-megapixel APS-C sensor came out. It was suspected that this might find its way into potentially upcoming EOS 80D and/or EOS 7D Mark II replacement models. Now it looks like the latter option is well and truly being taken off the table.

Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon is killing off the EOS 7D line completely. Although it does seem like an EOS 90D (I’m assuming that’s what an 80D replacement will be called), might be a little beefier than we expected as a result, given the mention of the LP-E6 battery alongside the new 32MP sensor.

Nearly two years after releasing the EOS Rebel SL2, Canon has announced the newest addition to its EOS line-up. Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is another affordable, tiny, and lightweight DSLR aimed particularly at those who are just starting out at photography and video. A big improvement over its predecessor is that it shoots 4K/24p, but unfortunately – with a huge crop.

From time to time, people compare professional video cameras with DSLRs or even smartphones. This is usually done to let you know that gear doesn’t matter as long as you have a good idea and skills. And this is cool. But when a Redditor Gidremuze316  asked the /r/videography crew to help him choose between a Canon 7D Mark II and an Arri Alexa, it led to an epic series of trolling comments.

2018 has been pretty exciting when it comes to photo gear. While many photographers and filmmakers are upgrading or completely switching systems, some prefer using their old gear for years.

Filmmaker Darious Britt has used a Canon 60D for eight years now, even though there are so many better cameras now available in the market. In this video, he discusses why he still chooses to stick with the good, old 60D instead of upgrading his gear.

Watch a timelapse of craftsman replacing a Canon 6D shutter

Have you ever wondered what it looks like when a technician repairs your camera? This timelapse will answer the question what happens when a shutter is being replaced. While it’s purely technical, it’s mesmerizing to watch. Not to mention I’m in awe when I see how many tiny, fragile parts the technician needs to deal with and leave them unharmed. In particular this case, the guy is working with Canon 6D. But I imagine it’s equally demanding with all DLSRs.

Canon patent shows giant new LCD flip screen for DSLRs

People have been begging Canon for years to put flippy out (or up) articulated LCDs on their higher end bodies for years. Now it looks like they may have listened. This patent from Canon Japan shows a new rear screen design that looks quite intriguing. As well as the size of the screen, it also shows new mechanisms to attach it to different types of camera body.

One thing strikes me as a little odd, though. The dial normally found on the back of a Canon DSLR sits underneath the LCD. So, it looks like it forces people to flip their LCD out if they wanted to actually use the camera. Still, it’s an interesting concept.
