Canon brings Eye Detection AF to 4K 120fps video and adds All-I 60p XF-AVD to the Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera

Canon has announced a new firmware update for the Canon EOS C70 cinema camera. Don’t get too excited just yet, though. They’ve announced it, but it’s not going to be available to download until December 8th. I can never make sense of why companies do this. Why not just announce it when it’s ready to be downloaded? Anyway, the new firmware brings a bunch of much-demanded features to the camera.

The features, Canon says will “help to improve workflow and functionality for the content creation, live production and documentarian markets”. This will be a free firmware update for Canon EOS C70 owners and should be a welcome addition to those who shoot with one.

Canon quietly reveals its 8K cinema camera to absolutely zero fanfare whatsoever

Well, this isn’t like Canon at all. After the big splash and months of build-up over the EOS R5’s launch and its 8K video capabilities, you’d expect they’d make a big deal about the launch of their new 8K EOS Cinema camera, but aside from a few sample clips, apparently not. Bear in mind, this is a camera that’s been more than five years in the making.

Canon Marketing Japan has released a new video with a lot of information about their new 8K cinema camera to their YouTube channel a couple of days before Christmas and told… well, pretty much nobody. And it’s not just a little teaser, either. This video is almost 12-minutes long featuring interviews with a number of Japanese camera operators and filmmakers.

Canon patents four RF mount cinema zoom lenses

A new patent discovered by the folks at Canon News seems to suggest that Canon’s been working on some RF mount cinema zoom lenses. What leads them to believe that these are cine lenses, are that they’re designed for an APS-C format and that the image circle is larger than that of a typical 3:2 format Canon APS-C sensor.

There are rumours of upcoming APS-C RF mount mirrorless cameras on the way, although none exist as of right now. If the rumours on such a camera turns out to be true, then these may end up being very high-end APS-C zooms. I think Super 35mm cine lenses is far more likely, though, especially with the recent release of the EOS Cinema C70.

Canon releases footage samples from upcoming 8K cinema camera

Long before people were complaining about the ridiculously high resolution, storage and editing demands of the RED 8K Helium sensor, Canon had already announced that it was working on an 8K camera, a prototype of which was shown off at the Canon Expo 2015 in Paris.

Since then, it’s been radio silence. 8K doesn’t have quite the same impact that it had back in 2015 and Canon has now also released the EOS R5 which, for better or worse, shoots 8K RAW video. But now Canon is teasing the impending announcement of their 8K cine camera, by releasing a bunch of sample footage shot with it.

Canon has today announced the newest addition to its EOS Cinema Line, the EOS C500 Mark II. It’s the next generation of the original EOS C500 and it sees some quite notable upgrades. The Super 35mm CMOS sensor has been upgraded to full-frame, the 4K resolution has been bumped up to 5.9K, and the CFast card slots are gone, replaced by a pair of faster CFexpress and an SD card slot for proxies.
