This is a general guide since there are so many ways to define a photography business.
Photography as a business is hard work. Really hard work. Ask any successful photographer and they’ll tell you. Even if it looks like they have an easy life now, they’ll tell you they had years of struggle to get where they’re at and they’re still probably doing more work than you, even after attaining a measure of success. If you’re a hobbyist, you can probably ignore this post.
Running a photography business (or any kind of business at all, really) isn’t for everybody, that’s for sure. But when and why should you call it a day and find a “real job”? The inevitable day has come. In a process that began several years ago when Costco began winding down some of its photography services, the company has now announced, via an “IMPORTANT PHOTO CENTRE ANNOUNCEMENT” on their website, that all Costco photo departments will close at all of Costco’s locations on February 14th.
Costco isn’t completely doing away with photography and will still be offering some services online, however, there will be no more in-store service. In an email sent to Costco customers, the company cites camera phones and social media as the cause, with fewer numbers of prints being made despite the massive increase in photos shot.

It’s a tough time for photographers and filmmakers. For most of us, our work relies on being able to interact and engage with other people in the real world. But social distancing and lockdown measures in place around the globe have put a stop to that. And the consequences have hit a lot of us very hard.
Lensrentals held a survey of more than a thousand professional photographers and filmmakers about how COVID-19 has affected their business. According to their results, more than 96% of those who responded said that their income or work had been negatively impacted by COVID-19, with an average of 78% of bookings cancelled during April. And May doesn’t look like it’s going to be that much better.
I want to start by saying that if you or your family and friends are impacted by the current events of COVID-19, I send my sincerest condolences. The tragedy, pain and suffering that the world is going through is immensely saddening and should not be taken lightly, so we should all be taking the necessary precautions to help prevent the spread through social distancing.
