Amaran, the entry-level brand of products from Aputure, has introduced two new light modifiers. Launched at NAB 2023, we see the Amaran Light Dome Mini SE (buy here) and the Amaran Spotlight SE (buy here). Both modifiers attach to your lights using a Bowens mount and are the first Bowens mount modifiers released under the Amaran brand.

Released alongside the Amaran 150C and 300C LED lights, these modifiers are similar to other modifiers sold under the main Aputure brand. They do have some differences, though. We caught up with Aputure’s Senior Product Marketing Manager, Brandon Le, at the show to find out more about them.

This DIY 3D printed adapter lets you use your speedlight softboxes on Bowens mount strobes and LEDs

For a lot of photographers, when we started dabbling with flash, we used speedlights. And even if we didn’t, we might have bought a small strobe like the Godox AD200 and one of those 60cm square softbox kits with the S1 or S2 bracket. But as we upgrade to larger Bowens mount strobes or LED lights, those softboxes kind of just sit there on the shelf doing nothing.

Well, Farrukh Pitafi has solved that issue by designing a 3D printable adapter that mounts into your light’s Bowens mount socket and provides the ring around the outside to let you use those speedlight softboxes. And he’s made the files available to download so you can make your own.

Only last month, Godox launched the first in their range of “SZ” zoomable LED lights, the SZ150R. This was also Godox’s first RGB Bowens mount LED. Now, they’ve followed it up, expanding the SZ range with a new SZ200Bi. As the name suggests, it’s a 200W bi-colour LED, offering a colour temperature range of 2800K-6500K with a 97+ CRI and 96+ TLCI.

As with the SZ150R, the SZ200Bi runs on 100-240v AC power, so this isn’t a portable light, and offers multiple control methods including the onboard UI on the back of the light, DMX, the RC-A6 remote or the Godox Light smartphone app.

Godox has launched its new Godox SZ150R LED light. It’s both RGB and bi-colour offering a range from 2800K up to 6500K with high CRI and TLCI ratings of 97 and 96. It has a number of control options, including onboard controls, the RC-R9 remote, a smartphone app as well as DMX control. And, as with most new Godox lights, it comes with a silent mode feature to eliminate fan noise!

And while the fact that this Bowens-mount LED light is both bicolour and RGB is pretty awesome, what’s particularly interesting is that the light on this is zoomable, offering an adjustable beam angle of between 20° and 65°.

At IBC 2019, Aputure had only just announced their new 600D LED light. But already it looks to have some serious competition in the form of Nanlite’s Forza 500. We visited the Nanlite stand to find out more about it, and to check out their new, massive, 10″ Fresnel modifier for it.
