A few days ago, we had the chance to observe this year’s first “Blood Moon.” It’s the total lunar eclipse that makes the moon appear red, hence the scary name of the phenomenon. But other than red, our moon can appear to have many different colors.

In a stunning composite image, Italian teacher and photographer Marcella Giulia Pace brought all colors of the moon together. From the usual greyish tones, all the way to yellow, deep red, blue, and even purple. Our moon appears in so many different shades, and Marcella brought them all together and shared some details of this captivating photo with DIYP.

Pablo Ruiz Garcia captured a spectacular image of this Halloween’s blue moon. A full moon occurring on Halloween is rare and only happens every 18 to 19 years, and a super moon is even rarer. We do not know for sure why blue moon is the name of this super moon. To the casual observer a full moon in general can have a slight blue tint due to smoke or particles in the atmosphere.

Pablo captured this image at the lighthouse of Isla de Mouro, Santander, Cantabria Spain. He will in the following tell us a little about how he captured the image.

The photos of Super Blue Blood Moon have been all over the internet in the past couple of days. Destin Sandlin from Smarter Every Day took some shots too, and he captured a phenomenon that got him utterly confused.

Destin and his friend Trevor Mahlmann shot the moon aligned with Saturn 5 rocket in Alabama, USA. As the tip of the rocket and the moon got aligned, a dark line appeared, and it stayed in line with the rocket’s tip all along. Destin has a great knowledge of both astronomy and photography, but this phenomenon got him so confused that he turned to the community for help. Can you tell what this line is?

It seems that some of us will have a very special January if we look up to the skies this month. We’re expecting to have two supermoons, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse is also coinciding with that second supermoon, so should be very cool. I say some of us, as the eclipse will only see totality from Eastern Asia and across the Pacific to the western USA & Canada.

NASA says that the two supermoons form part of a “trilogy”, the first of which happened last month. The next two are scheduled for January 1st (yup, tonight!) and January 31st. The second full moon at the end of the month, is called a “Blue moon”. This will be the second supermoon, that just happens to have a total lunar eclipse.
