Panasonic has officially announced its raw video features for the Panasonic S5 IIX (buy here). As expected, there’s no raw recording internally, with both ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW support being provided by external recorders using raw over HDMI output. Raw support was always expected to come to the Panasonic S5 IIX, but it wasn’t confirmed at the time of the product announcement

Now, it appears to be available with the camera supporting both formats through external monitor recorders from Atomos and Blackmagic. Panasonic has also announced that a firmware update will also be coming in June for the Panasonic S5 II to add Blackmagic RAW support using raw over HDMI with the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR.

Blackmagic released DaVinci Resolve for the Apple M1 back in March, shortly after DaVinci Resolve 17 was released. And while Blackmagic’s editing suite itself was now optimised for the new Apple Silicon based machines, not all of its codecs were – including Blackmagic RAW.

Blackmagic has now released an update with version 2.1 of Blackmagic RAW that provides native Apple Silicone support, to more easily incorporate BRAW footage into your Apple M1-based workflow. They’ve also added support for a bunch of Panasonic and Nikon cameras, too.

Panasonic has announced an upcoming firmware for the Panasonic S1 and S5 that brings full-frame 5.9K 12-Bit RAW over HDMI video capabilities to the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR. There is a slight caveat for S1 users, though. S1 users will need to have purchased the $200 DMW-SFU2 Upgrade Software Key to unlock the extra video features of the S1 – but aside from that, it’s a free update for those users.

Owners of the Panasonic S5 will not have to buy that software key and will just get the features as soon as the firmware becomes available – which is expected on July 12th and will become available on the Panasonic Lumix Global Customer Support Website.

Nikon recently announced that the Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II will get the ability to record both Blackmagic RAW and ProRes RAW to the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G models and Atomos Ninja V respectively. Well, now, the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 have also received Blackmagic RAW support with the release of a new v3.20 firmware update.

The new update also includes video metadata for ProRes RAW video files shot with the Atomos Ninja V, allowing you to adjust white balance and ISO in post if you’re using Final Cut Pro (v10.4.9 or higher). But hold your horses, it’s not all great news.

As mentioned during the initial announcement of Nikon’s two mirrorless cameras, the Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II, both will be eligible for a firmware upgrade to add RAW over HDMI capabilities (it does not come with the camera out of the box). As with RAW over HDMI on the Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras, though, it is still a $200 paid upgrade.

We already knew that ProRes Support would be coming in the form of the Atomos Ninja V, although Blackmagic has now confirmed to No Film School that they’ll also be supporting Z6 II/Z7 II 4K60p BRAW recording in the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G as well. And if you’ve already upgraded your Z6 or Z7, you’ll get it with those, too!

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K attracted me the instant it was announced. I’d been looking at upgrading from my Nikons to something a little better suited to shooting video for a while and on paper it looked like the perfect solution. I’ve been in possession of one for a couple of weeks now, so I wanted to give you some of my initial thoughts about the camera and how I see it fitting into my workflow.

Here’s how you can edit Blackmagic RAW footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

When the news that Blackmagic were replacing CinemaDNG with their own Blackmagic RAW format, there was a mixed reaction. It’s Blackmagic’s own format, offering a lot of benefits over similar formats when it comes to speed, file size and efficiency. But it’s only officially supported by Blackmagic’s own DaVinci Resolve editing and grading software.

Fortunately, though, Blackmagic released the new format with an API that allows 3rd parties to integrate BRAW compatibility into their software. Adobe hasn’t picked up that gauntlet yet, but the developers at Autokroma have. Their BRAW Studio plugin allows you to use BRAW footage easily within Premiere Pro. In this video, Gerald Undone shows us how it works.
