Bentley launches 57.7 gigapixel image, the most detailed landscape photo ever

Gigapixel images are something we mainly see at political events or sports games. But Bentley Motors has raised the bar of advertising and used this technique to show off their Bentley Flying Spur W12 S.

Their new gigapixel photo is set in Dubai, and it allows you to explore the magnificent scene to spot their latest model of the car. But you can examine the picture further and check out what else is there, and it’s quite amusing.

This 53 Gigapixel Bentley photograph lets you read the seat’s embroidered logo from over 2,000 feet away

Gigapixel images have taken off like crazy over the last couple of years.  With devices like the Gigapan and similar products becoming so readily available and the massive increase in sensor resolution lately, they’re becoming easier and easier to create.

While typically used to document sporting or political events, or to show off an entire city, this is the first time I’ve seen the technique used in advertising.  Here it’s being used to promote the Bentley Mulsanne EWB.

Bentley shoots High End ad with iPhone 5S – Edits with iPad

When you think about a camera to match the Bentley brand you probably go as high as you can, Red Dragon, Arri Alexa something along those lines. This is why I was kind of shocked to discover that Bentley’s new ad Intelligent Details was shot entirely on the iPhone 5S.

The video shows Luc Donckerwolke, director of design, and SangYup Lee, head of exterior design, talking about their motivations and decisions inside a $298,000 Bentley Mulsanne.

While the story and cinematography are really catching I hate to say that the camera does not hold its own. Easy shots are…. OK. But the camera really falls when it comes to more complex shots and dynamic range.

Alex Baker is a portrait and lifestyle driven photographer based in Valencia, Spain. She works on a range of projects from commercial to fine art and has had work featured in publications such as The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveller and El Mundo, and has exhibited work across Europe

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
