It’s no secret that Nikon’s been struggling. Ever since Sony went full-on into their Alpha mirrorless system, both Nikon and Canon saw some serious competition. It hit Nikon a lot more than it hit Canon, but that might be changing.

According to a new report from BCN Retail on lens sales covering the first six months of 2023, Nikon Z mount takes the number two spot and finally escaping its single-digit market share. Not surprisingly, Sony still has a massive lead.

The rankings for 2020 are in from BCN, which collects sales data from across its platforms, and it looks like the most popular DSLR sold in Japan throughout the course of 2020 is the Nikon D5600. Don’t get too happy just yet, though, Nikon fanboys and girls. Canon still managed to grab 7 of the remaining 9 spots in the top 10.

Canon rises at Sony’s expense in the Japan mirrorless camera market

BCN Retail’s latest rankings are out for the Japanese camera market, which has been showing some pretty alarming trends over the last few months. Primarily that Sony’s share of the full-frame mirrorless market has plummeted from 60% to 43.9% and falling while Canon’s has gone up from about 25% to 34.7% and looking to keep going.

The trends also show that while Nikon seems to be down on average, they do seem to have climbed a little in the past couple of months. Panasonic is also seeing a slight bump thanks to the release of the Panasonic S5, and while the Sigma fp was the hottest thing on the Japanese camera market at one point, it seems to be slipping.

Well, this is interesting. According to the latest report from BCNRetail, Olympus has ousted Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji to top the sales in Japan for the month of February, thanks to pretty significant sales of the Olympus PEN E-PL9, taking 11.1% of the share and the OM-D E-M10 Mark III grabbing a further 5.2%.

The graph above shows mirrorless sales share in Japan by total number of units sold. Amongst the top ten camera spots, Sony claimed four of them, with Canon taking a further two, and Nikon & Fuji taking one each.

As usual, market research and analysis firm BCN announced its annual BCN Awards, accolades given to photography equipment manufacturers based on sales volume, calculated from data gathered from thousands of retailers across Japan.

Of course, since this is based only on the Japanese market it doesn’t tell the entire story, but it’s interesting nonetheless to get such a broad perspective of how the camera market is doing and seeing who is selling what.
