Many photographers love using natural window light, and I must admit I’m one of them. But when the weather just isn’t cooperating, you have to rely on artificial lighting. Still, you can recreate that window light that you like, and in this video, Barry Mountford shows you how.
Light, shadow, highlight: A guide to window light portraits
Window light portraits are something we all can do from the comfort of our own homes, Its quite amazing during this time of lockdown, actually having the time to observe the light around the home at different times during the day and how it can transform a room as the sun pops out from behind the clouds, so what a perfect time to learn and practice lighting during this downtime.
Using a family member, ornament or one of those polystyrene heads and spending time watching how the light falls on the subject and by turning the subject and seeing how that effects the light and shadows is priceless and the perfect way to understand lighting in our portraiture.

How I photographed this $5 watch to look like a luxury product shot
The cheapest watch I could find, that was my mission! Getting creative with one light
So you have just picked up your first light or you have had one light for a while now and you are wondering what more you can create with just that one light, well you can create LOADS. I see many post/comments saying they can’t do that as they only have one light and while it is more efficient using more lights in certain situations it really is quite amazing what you can create with just one, so my best advice is to get out and shoot loads, experiment and fail as many times as you can, because honestly you will learn more this way and the experience gained will stay with you, In this post I will show you just a few ways I have created images with one light, now this is no tutorial more a post on ideas to try .
