Atomos Ninja V

New Atomos tools let you upload footage to Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud as it’s still being shot

Atomos has announced the new Atomos Connect accessory that plugs your Ninja V or Ninja V+ and a new Shogun Connect all-in-one device, both of which allow you to capture and beam your footage straight up to the Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C). The Frame.io C2C system is designed to better aid remote collaboration or for sending footage shot on location back to home base so it can start being worked on while the shoot’s still going on.

You can also record your high-quality footage simultaneously with bandwidth-friendly proxies with matching filenames and timecodes for faster transfers. The new proxies can be automatically uploaded to Frame.io C2C using a new Atomos progressive file transfer tech that begins transferring the file even while it’s still being recorded. Then somebody can start working on it and just swap out for the full footage later on.

Atomos Ninja V gets H.265 – New Ninja V+ records 4K 120fps and 8K ProRes RAW

The Atomos Ninja V has been a staple amongst video shooters wishing to work with Apple’s ProRes RAW – which isn’t surprising considering it supports pretty much every mirrorless camera out there capable of providing RAW over HDMI. But now it’s seen a new update to provide it with h.265 recording abilities.

The Ninja lineup also sees a couple of new additions today. The first is the Atomos Ninja V+, capable of shooting both 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps video in ProRes RAW. The other is the socially distanced Ninja Stream, capable of simultaneous ProRes and H.264/5 proxy recording while also beaming your video signal over WiFi, ethernet or live stream without the need for a PC.

Atomos is bringing ProRes RAW video to the Sony FX3

This announcement is probably a big surprise to absolutely nobody, but Atomos is bringing ProRes RAW support to the Atomos Ninja V when used in conjunction with the new Sony A7S III FX3 cinema camera. Atomos says this combo should allow users “the ability to record the camera’s 16-bit RAW output at up to 4K60p”.

Atomos has worded that bit very carefully because while the Sony FX3 does indeed put out 16-Bit RAW over the HDMI port, ProRes RAW on the Atomos Ninja V records “only” 12-Bit. But, it’s producing those 12-Bits from the best possible starting point, thanks to the 16-Bit feed out of the camera. And 12’s still plenty.

The Sony A7S III will get ProRes RAW over HDMI recording with the Atomos Ninja V

In a not surprising move, Atomos has announced that the Atomos Ninja V will support RAW over HDMI from the Sony A7S III in an update to the recorder next month. It will support ProRes RAW at 4K and up to 60 frames per second, simultaneously bypassing the 30-minute recording limit of 4K60 internal on the A7S III.

It won’t record the native 16-bit linear RAW of the Sony A7S III, as it will compress it down to the 12-bit Log RAW the Atomos Ninja V is famous for. And for when you don’t need RAW, it will also save to 10-Bit 4:2:2 Log or Rec.709 in Apple ProRes or Avid DNx codecs. Phillip Bloom has had a chance to play with the combo and produced a video showing off its capabilities.

Panasonic’s new S1H firmware has been released but you still can’t shoot ProRes RAW

Recently, Panasonic announced that the Panasonic S1H mirrorless camera would receive a new firmware update on May 25th that would, amongst other things, add support for RAW over HDMI so that you could record 4K ProRes RAW to the Atomos Ninja V recorder. Well, it’s May 25th, the new firmware has dropped, but you can’t shoot ProRes RAW yet.

Panasonic and Atomos have released a joint statement stating that an “unforeseen technical issue” during the final round of beta testing requires a little more work. A release date for the updated update which includes ProRes RAW support will be released at a future unspecified day, at which point the new Atomos Ninja V AtomOS will be released, too.

Sigma fp to receive LOG profile and RAW over HDMI video next year through firmware update

Our friends at Cinema5D had the chance to chat with Sigma recently at Inter Bee 2019 in China. Naturally, they chatted about the Sigma fp mirrorless camera. If you’ve not been keeping up, the fp is a camera capable of shooting full-frame 12-Bit CinemaDNG RAW. But those are huge files. So, other options are required for those who want to keep file sizes down or to be able to record RAW to an external device like the Atomos Ninja V.

Sigma says during the interview that a future firmware update coming in 2020 will add a LOG picture profile, and provide RAW video output over HDMI. They also say that if you do choose to shoot CinemaDNG, you will be able to play it back in-camera – something it can’t currently do.

Atomos has announced that they are working with Panasonic to co-develop Raw over HDMI for the recently announced Panasonic S1H mirrorless camera. Naturally, the device they plan to record to is the Atomos Ninja V 4K HDR monitor/recorder. Atomos says that this will be a free update for the Ninja V when released by Panasonic.

Nikon confirms Z RAW video firmware will be a paid upgrade – but they did give us free N-Log LUTs

Nikon’s long-awaited firmware update for the Z6 and Z7 to add 4K ProRes raw video capability via an external recorder still isn’t here. We still don’t know when it’s going to be coming beyond “later this year”, although we do now know that this will not be a free firmware update. It will be a paid upgrade. That’s going to upset some people.

You can still shoot 10-bit N-Log video externally already without raw capabilities, although N-Log hasn’t exactly been the easiest to grade. Nikon has now, however, released two completely free LUT files for both the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 cameras.

Is 4:2:2 video worth it? Can you even tell the difference over 4:2:0?

The difference between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 along with 8-bit vs 10-bit was a hot discussion back when the Panasonic GH5 was announced. It was the first small form factor camera to offer 10-bit 4:2:2 internal, and it confused a lot of people. It still seems to confuse a lot of people, but even if you do understand it, can you even really see a difference between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0?

While only offering 8-bit colour, not 10-bit, Gerald Undone decided to compare 4:2:0 recorded internally on his Sony A7III with external 4:2:2 recorded using the Atomos Ninja V to see if you can really see a difference in the footage. It may not be as significant as you might think.

Atomos Shinobi goes head to head with SmallHD FOCUS 5″ at $75 less

For me, the separation between SmallHD and Atomos was pretty clear. Atomos made recording monitors (mostly) and SmallHD made monitors that do not record. This is changing with Atomos latest Announcement, the Atomos Shinobi. The Atomos Shinobi is a 5.2″ on camera monitor that has (give or take) all the fancy features that the Atomos Ninja V has, sans internal recording and $300.
