Astronomers capture tail of asteroid after NASA impact

Astronomers captured an extraordinary image of the vast plume of dust and debris blasted from the surface of the asteroid struck by NASA’s spacecraft last week. The image shows at least a 10,000-kilometer-long dust trail.

The image was captured by NOIRlab’s SOAR telescope based in Chile. The plume or tail is called the ejecta and is similar to those seen trailing a comet. It was captured two days after NASA’s DART experiment where they deliberately crashed an unmanned spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos to see if they could successfully alter its course.

It’s not every day that NASA sends a $300 million spacecraft to smash deliberately into an asteroid. But that is exactly what happened this week with the DART mission. Allegedly the mission was successful and we now know that science-fiction end of the world by asteroid scenarios could potentially be avoided in real life. And we don’t even need Bruce Willis.

Another first was made as well during the mission. It was the first time that telescopes Hubble and James Webb made observations of the same object simultaneously.

It sounds like the plot of an ‘end of the world’ sci-fi movie. But this is not fiction. Today, NASA will be attempting to power a rocket into an asteroid to alter its course. And you can watch it live, via possibly the world’s ultimate field-cam, the asteroid-cam.

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) is headed straight for the asteroid called Dimorphos. The asteroid will be struck at around 14,000 mph and is billed as a test drive to see if the technique could work even a tiny bit in the case of an asteroid coming dangerously close to hitting the earth.

Hubble has taken quite a lot of stunning images over its three-decade-long existence. And recently, it took managed to capture a photo of the asteroid 16 Psyche in the most detailed image so far. What’s special about it? Well, one of the things that make it special is that it contains iron and nickel worth around $10,000 quadrillion. For comparison, that’s 70,000 times the global economy.
