A lot of folks expected more from Sony during Photokina 2018’s announcements. The “baby A9” rumoured to come in the form of the A7000 was nowhere to be mentioned. Instead, we’ll just get better cat photos thanks to Sony’s new Animal Eye AF.

But Kenji Tanaka, global head of Sony’s interchangeable lens camera business, has confirmed in an interview with Pronews.jp that they will once again start focusing on higher-end APS-C cameras.

After releasing a few images of what is reported to be Canon’s next mirrorless offering, Nokishita have released a few more images of the EOS M50, along with a pretty extensive set of specs, too. Overall, it doesn’t look too bad. 10fps shooting, ISO 100-25600, 4K video, CC-Raw, and “Pupil detection AF” which sounds an awful lot like eye-tracking.

Leica has officially launched CL, the latest addition to their APS-C L-mount series. In terms of design, it leans on the traditional models and even shares the name with their camera from 1973. But of course, it’s a mirrorless digital camera with modern features. It features a 24.2MP CMOS sensor, and it’s capable of shooting up to 10fps. ISO ranges from 100 to 50,000, so Leica CL promises good results even in difficult lighting conditions. According to DPReview, it’s “(almost) what the TL should have been.”

Along with the new Leica CL, the company has launched a new lens too: Elmarit-TL 18 mm f/2.8 ASPH. It’s an AF pancake wide-angle lens designed for the APS-C L-mount cameras.

A camera with a crop (APS-C) sensor and the one with a full frame sensor give different results with the same lens. It can sound abstract in theory before you actually see the results. Photographer Ilko Alexandroff created a comparison between APS-C body and a full frame body, using 85mm and 135mm lenses on both. So, from this video, you can see exactly how these lenses perform on a crop and on a full frame body, and how the combination of the camera and the lens affects the photo. It’s interesting to see the changes, and if you are still relatively new to this topic, you will find this very useful.

When the Canon EOS 70D was announced in July 2013 it was the first Canon crop camera in a while that didn’t come with an 18mp sensor. Not that the extra two megapixels made a huge difference, but it was a good indicator of the company’s direction.

Back in the day the 20.2mp sensor was the highest resolution APS-C sensor ever created by Canon, and two years later and the camera’s successor, presumed to be called 80D, is rumored to include sensor somewhere in the 28 to 34 megapixel range.
