Canon 7D Mark II mirrorless successor, the Canon EOS R7, rumoured to be announcing in late 2022

Well, it’s been a minute or two since we last heard about Canon finally creating a follow-up to their popular Canon EOS 7D Mark II, the APS-C sports and wildlife shooter announced in 2014 and reportedly discontinued in 2019. There were reports at the end of 2020 that an “EOS R7” was spotted out in the wild, with many expecting an imminent announcement. It never came.

APS-C RF mount rumours started to hot back up again last September, though, but since then it’s basically been radio silence – except for a vague mention of an APS-C RF mount camera coming this year. Now, though, Canon Rumors is reporting that the Canon EOS R7 (they say they’ve confirmed that this is what it’ll be called) is going to be announced later during 2022, with Q4 being the most likely timeframe.

Canon APS-C RF mount camera expected in 2022, new camera registrations, is EOS-M disappearing?

Well, a couple of things coming out of the Canon camp today. First up, Nokishita has spotted two new camera registrations from Canon coming from what appears to be a Russian certification body. The two bodies are unreleased cameras with the codes DS126841 and DS126842. The other is an update on the long-awaited APS-C RF mount mirrorless camera.

The timing of these two seemingly independent bits of info seems quite convenient and I think they may be linked. I also think this could spell the end for Canon’s EOS-M system. I don’t think it’ll happen overnight, but if an APS-C RF mount body is on the way, what’s the point of keeping the second mount system around?

Nikon Z fc 28mm f/2.8 Special Edition Kit release date delayed indefinitely

We already knew that Nikon struggling to keep up with the pre-order demand of the Nikon Z fc, after an announcement earlier this month telling us exactly that. That original announcement said that the Z fc and Zfc 28mm f/2.8 Special Edition Kits were both scheduled to be released late this month, but that there are going to be delays and it will take some time for items to be delivered.

Now, a new announcement from Nikon says that the Z fc 28mm f/2.8 Special Edition Kits are on hold indefinitely. The release doesn’t specifically state that there are any delays on the lens sold separately, but given that the camera itself and the 16-50mm kits are expected to release on time, I would imagine the lens itself is what’s causing the delays.

Less than four days after Nikon Z fc announcement, Nikon can’t keep up with demand

The new Nikon Z cf APS-C mirrorless was only announced four days ago and Nikon has already issued a statement claiming that they can’t keep up with the pre-order demands. The statement was posted to the Nikon Japan website yesterday, citing the “large number of reservations”. This goes for both the Z fc body only as well as the kit containing the new 28mm f/2.8 Special Edition lens.

I suppose it’s not entirely unexpected, as every single product announced by any manufacturer in the world of photography and video these days seems to be followed up by an “Oh no, we didn’t realise it’d be this popular!” statement a few days later. But, really? Come on, manufacturers. What are you doing?!?

Is Nikon’s newly announced retro-inspired Z fc their best vlogging camera so far?

Well, the rumour mill seems to have been a little off. It wasn’t Canon that was announcing a new camera today, but Nikon. Nikon has now officially announced their latest addition to their Z mirrorless lineup, the retro FM-inspired Nikon Z fc. It features a 20.9-megapixel APS-C sized sensor paired with an EXPEED 6 processor for fast performance and 4K UHD video.

It also seems that Nikon might’ve actually finally figured out how to make a decent vlogging camera. Well, almost. It offers full-time eye-detection autofocus, a flippy out LCD, a built-in stereo microphone, a 3.5mm socket for an external microphone and built-in live streaming although it doesn’t feature any IBIS, which may be a dealbreaker for some vloggers.

Leaked images show Nikon’s retro-inspired Zfc APS-C mirrorless camera has a flippy out LCD

It seems an odd move so early in the game when Nikon is still building out its mirrorless camera range, but it looks like they’re releasing a follow up to their retro-styled DSLR, the Nikon Df. Sort of. According to some leaked specs and photos, there are going to be some significant differences between the Nikon Df and the anticipated Nikon Zfc.

For a start, naturally, it’s switching from being a DSLR to a mirrorless camera. It’s also rumoured to be an APS-C camera, not a full-frame, more closely resembling the Nikon Z50 rather than a flagship model. And it will have a flippy out LCD, suggesting that it will most certainly offer video features unlike the Nikon Df, which offered none.

Sony’s upcoming not-A6700 APS-C camera to be targeted to vloggers, not photographers

The folks at Sony Alpha Rumors say they’ve seen the Sony new APS-C camera and that they’ve been able to discern some solid details from it. Like, the fact that it’ll be a 24-megapixel sensor (and not the rumoured 32-megapixel sensor), and the general overall design of the system.

From what they describe, it sounds a lot like the camera that the Canon EOS M50 should have been – You know an APS-C camera with flippy out LCD that shoots 4K video – but without a stupid crop in 4K mode, that they still have with the Mark II. Except, I expect the Sony will have better autofocus.

Canon EOS M system not dead – but apparently it’s going in a “new direction”

If there’s one camera mount that has had enough hype over the last year or so that they should be pumping out cameras weekly to take advantage of it, it’s Canon’s EOS M system. We’re keeping EOS M! We’re killing EOS M! No, we’re keeping it! Ok, it’s definitely dying! Maybe…

This latest one suggests that while rumours of the EOS M camera system might be greatly exaggerated, they’re possibly not completely without merit. Canon Rumors reports a source has informed them that Canon plans to “pivot the EOS M system in a new direction”. Exactly what that means, is anybody’s guess, but it looks like EOS M isn’t being killed off after all. At least, not for today.

Canon EOS M to be killed off in 2021, two new APS-C RF mount cameras to be announced

The potential impending death of Canon’s EOS M APS-C mirrorless camera system seems like it’s just been drawn out for far too long. One minute Canon’s still full steam ahead on EOS M and the next there are rumours of the inevitable demise of the entire APS-C Canon EOS M lineup.

The latest rumours, though, suggest we won’t have much longer to wait to find out the fate of Canon APS-C, with multiple sources confirming to Canon Rumors that this will be the final year for EOS M and that two APS-C RF mount cameras are coming. Oddly, though, there won’t be any dedicated APS-C RF mount lenses.

Canon “EOS R7” APS-C RF mount camera reported to be testing in the wild

Rumours of an APS-C RF mount camera from Canon have been around ever since the Canon EOS R was first announced in September 2018. There’s been a bit of back and forth from Canon about this, stating that they had no plans to kill off their APS-C EOS M lineup in favour of APS-C RF, but they didn’t rule it out completely.

We haven’t heard any more in the last couple of months since it was reported that such a camera was “definitely” on the way in October, but now Canon Rumors is reporting that a new APS-C RF mount camera, potentially a more pro-level “EOS R7” (not an official moniker), similar to the old EOS 7D DSLR line is indeed out in the wild being tested right now.
