The easiest way to balance flash with ambient light when shooting outdoors

If you’ve been a predominantly natural light shooter then the prospect of adding a flash or strobe to your images could feel a little daunting. Suddenly your way of controlling light just doesn’t seem to work anymore, and it can be incredibly frustrating just trying to get the beautiful subtle effect that you’re probably going for.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Adding a hint of strobe to ambient or outdoor natural light is a great way to take your images up a notch. And as Pye Jirsa shows us in this video from Adorama, it really doesn’t have to be complicated or scary.

We’ve had a few tutorials showing how to balance strobes and ambient light. Usually we focus on a how the exposure work, adding a strobe, and then knocking 2 stops off the exposure.

In this video Manny Ortiz, does it all without dealing with calculating exposure. (Manny is also not using a light meter). Instead, Manny works his way through chimping the camera, which (at least for one light) may be a faster process.

How To Create The Perfect Milk Splash Outdoor

I have been writing for DIYP for over a year now, and I can’t believe I haven’t written an article on how to create milk splash shots. It is, after all, one of my favorite things to do (and it is amazingly easy). So, here it is. This will be a two part article. In this article we will be doing it outdoors using only ambient light and reflectors and next week we will bring it indoors using strobes.

From Shooting To Post Production: How To Balance Flash With Ambient Light

Natural light is a wonderful thing, but sometimes we need to supplement it with an artificial light source, such as a flash, to really get the look we’re going for. In the video tutorial below, Gavin Hoey takes us behind the scenes of a Robin Hood themed photoshoot to show us the techniques he used to seamlessly blend a flash with the low, ambient light in the forest where the shoot took place.

Hoey explains how to use different modes including aperture priority and manual mode to capture the image you see above. The light wasn’t as great as Hoey hoped it would be on the day of the shoot so he calls on a Flashpoint RoveLight 600 outfitted inside of a Glow ParaPop 28″ R Softbox, to help create some of the dramatic lighting you see. There was a little added magic done to the photo in post production, but nothing to difficult and Hoey (the nice guy that he is) included a walk through of his  post production, as well. [Read More…]
