Shutterfly to be merged with Snapfish after $2.7B acquisition

American private equity firm, Apollo Global Management LLC (AGM), has agreed to acquire photo printing platforms Shutterfly and Snapfish. According to Reuters, AGM is set to purchase Shutterfly Inc for $2.7 billion, including $900 million in debt. AGM also announced intentions to purchase Snapfish LLC, another Internet-based retailer of photography products. And, apparently, they plan to merge them together.[Read More…]

Manfrotto just bought out JOBY and Lowepro to expand into vlogging markets

It looks like vlogging has turned from being the strange pastime of a select few “self-absorbed” individuals into a more mainstream pursuit. When companies like Vitec, owner of Manfrotto, start taking an interest in the genre, you know it has probably become a big deal.

Vitec today announced that they have acquired two of the companies most associated with vlogging equipment. JOBY, makers of the GorillaPod, and Lowepro, probably the most popular brand of camera bag out there amongst vloggers.

Lexar to carry on under new ownership with potential grand plans for the future

There was a lot of upset with the recent announcement that Micron were to discontinue the Lexar brand. A lot of previous and potential customers became concerned. Is support going away? Should they switch to a different brand? If they buy now, are their warranties still good? I know quite a few photographers who made the overnight switch to SanDisk without a second thought.

But now, it seems that Lexar will be just fine. Micron have sold the brand to Chinese flash storage company, Longsys. As a leader in consumer flash storage, it seems that the Lexar brand is definitely staying. Their mission is “to make Lexar the go-to brand for high-performance removable storage”. They also say they’ll be expanding on it to provide even more solutions in today’s big data and wireless landscape.
