Houston Teen Dies While Taking Selfies with a Gun

Many people seem to leave common sense behind when it comes to taking photos, especially selfies, as if they’re somehow safe if what they’re doing is for a photo. Sadly, the selfie craze claimed another victim on Tuesday as a gun held by 19-year-old Deleon Alonso Smith accidently went off.

Smith’s cousin, who was in another room at the time of the accident, said they found the gun earlier that day.

KPRC’s report does not specify if the gun was faulty or if Smith pulled the trigger, but either way the desire to get a cool selfie lead to a fatal shot to the throat and two young children without a father.

Photographer Severely Hit In Car Accident, D800E Survives

Photographer Scott Murray shares a difficult accident story over at Nikonites where he was involved in a severe car accident after avoiding a buffalo on the road. His car rolled over six times. His Nikon D800E took quite a bash hitting his head a few times as well as rolling with the car.

Hey everyone I am alive. Here’s what happened, I was driving back after getting my car serviced, I stopped as some friends places and decided to hang back for some Milky Way shots as there is no moon. At around 0130 I was driving to another spot I was doing 110km/hr and a large buffalo walked on to the road, I served to miss him and I think I clipped him but over corrected and ended up rolling approximately 6 times, I remember the first two rolls and that’s it I was out. I woke up to find myself hanging from my seat belt I manage to get myself out of the car, I blank out again, when I wake I test to see if I was working spinal wise. All good for now, then I manage to find a sheet from a recent camping trip within arms length and a camp mattress I get myself covered and warm. Then I wait for around 4 hrs until someone does past and stops. I am still in hospital. And on lots of med. Will update when I can, thanks for the support. I am keeping this off fb as I don’t want my mum to worry.

Photographer and Assistant Seriously Injured In Photo Shoot Explosion

Unfortunately, accidents do happen, even in the world of photography. Sometimes they incur only minor setbacks, sometimes it’s very costly. And, other times, they can be life-threatening. That is the reality for photographer Helmut Montoya and a production assistant who were both injured on Tuesday when a photo shoot in a Fort Lauderdale junk yard went awry causing an explosion. According to sources, the crew was using candles on set, and it is believed that the flames incidentally ignited lingering fuel vapors in nearby cans, setting things off.

A Fatal Month for Selfie Photographers; Why is it So Dangerous?

Selfies have become enormously popular in recent years and are everywhere these days. Wherever there’s a beach, a famous landmark, a rainbow or even just oxygen, you’re likely to see someone taking a selfie. Even elephants are doing it now!

Two major problems have emerged hand-in-hand with the often duck-faced photos. The first is that people are too focused on themselves. Not in the sense that they are constantly admiring themselves through endless narcissistic self-portraits, as true as that may be, but that they are too busy trying to photograph themselves that they don’t notice the dangers surrounding them.

The other problem is the need hardcore selfie fans feel to outdo others and the irresponsible competition it promotes.

Just this month, in what might be one of the deadliest in selfie history, at least two people have died and one is currently in serious condition after their selfie attempts went horribly wrong.
