It’s been a long while since the Leica Summilux 90mm f/1.5 ASPH lens was first rumoured way back in 2017. Finally, last week, things looked a little promising as a few images of the lens had been leaked. But with the serial number of the lens shown falling into 26 known lenses that had been published in the Leica Pocket Guide (1953-2018) nobody was quite sure if it was actually coming soon.

Today, though, it’s official. Leica has now announced the new Leica Summilux 90mm f/1.5 ASPH lens. The fast long prime is designed primarily for shooting portraits with a very shallow depth of field. But it s not cheap, by any stretch of the imagination, coming in at a hair under $13,000.

So far, it seems 2017 has been the year of comebacks. Leica is another brand bringing the vintage gear back, and they’re resurrecting their 1935 soft-focus lens, Thambar 90mm f/2.2. The classic lens returns with the old design and the soft-focus look of its predecessor. However, there are still some changes and improvements coming with the modern version.

The lens leaks and announcements are coming through thick and fast at the moment, aren’t they?

You might’ve noticed Tamron’s teaser image floating around lately suggesting that some new lenses might be coming, but now Tamron officially joins Sigma, Sony, Samyang, SLR Magic, Canon, and others launching new glass in 2016 with the announcement of two new lenses.

Sony Announces 4 ‘FE’ full-frame E-mount Lenses, Converters And Software Update

Joining Sony’s system of over 60 lenses are the ZEISS Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA wide angle lens, an FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens, an FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS hi-magnification zoom lens and an FE 28mm F2 wide angle prime lens.

The lenses are all currently listed as “New Arrival” shipping within 7-14 business days at B&H, but that is most likely a mistake as they should be available in April, July, March (in two weeks time, so this one is correct) and May, respectively.

The new α E-mount lenses are accompanied by two sets of ultra-wide and fisheye converters, one for the newly announced 28mm lens and the other for existing APS-C E-mount lenses.

Sony has also released a software update for several FE full-frame E-mount lenses that will shorten start up time.
