There isn’t really much about this lens that we didn’t already know, except for the surprisingly low $499 price tag, thanks to last month’s leaked specs, photos and video but Venus Optics has now officially announced the new Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra-Macro APO “CA-Dreamer” lens. The lens was expected to be announced on May 23rd, although that seems to have been delayed until today.

This full-frame lens is available in several mirrorless mounts including Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Leica L. It’s a manual focus lens with a minimum focus distance of 20.5cm and a magnification factor of 2x. It weighs in at only 619g, and provides what Venus Optics says is “superb optical performance and outstanding sharpness”.

Well, it looks like Venus Optics is getting ready to announce at least one more lens. Not surprisingly, it’s a macro lens. Photos and specs have leaked for an upcoming Laowa FFii 90mm f/2.8 CA-Dreamer 2x Macro lens, that will be available in mounts for Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Leica L.

The lens is expected to be officially announced on May 23rd and while are no sample photos to show what the view through the lens looks like, enough specs have leaked to cover the basics. There are also some leaked photos and Sony Alpha Rumors even posted an unboxing video to YouTube by Camera Beta.

Sigma has today announced two new lenses in their full-frame mirrorless lineup. First, we have a new 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary with a very attractive $639 price tag. The other is a shorter, wider angle 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary lens with an equally impressive price tag. Literally, it’s the exact same price.

Interestingly, today also marks Sigma’s 60th birthday. Yes, the company was established on September 9th, 1961. Sigma has set up a dedicated section on their website to talk about the company’s time in its 60-year history.

Sigma has scheduled a Sigma Stage Online event on their YouTube channel for Thursday, September 9th at 9pm JST. That’s 1pm in the UK, 8am Eastern and 5pm Pacific US. As usual, Sigma hasn’t stated what they’re going to be announcing, but it’s expected to be the upcoming 90mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/2 DG DN mirrorless lenses.

Not surprisingly, some details for both lenses have been leaked by Nokishita. Both lenses are DG DN Contemporary lenses designed specifically for mirrorless camera systems. For Sigma, that means Leica L and Sony E mounts for now. Both are expected to come with a price tag of $669 each.

Sony’s New FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro Lens Takes On Canon’s 100mm f/2.8 In Lensrentals’ Resolution TEst

We got a pre-release set of Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS Macro lenses in for preliminary testing last week, and I was kind of excited about this lens for a couple of reasons. First it simply gives me a nice short telephoto prime option that has been lacking in the lineup (although the Zeiss 85mm Batis lens will be coming along fairly soon). Second, it gives me a true macro lens at the focal length I prefer.

I hoped that the combination of a good macro lens with the A7r sensor would turn out to be a winner. We used our Imatest lab to compare Sony 90mm f/2.8 G OSS lenses mounted to Sony A7r cameras, and compared them with Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS Macro lenses shot on Canon 5DIII cameras in our Imatest lab. (For those who are curious, we can’t test Sony E mount lenses on an optical bench because the electromagnetic focus system requires electrical power to operate. Until we do some really geeky, overly complex engineering modifications, the optical bench isn’t an option for Sony E mount lenses.) It would have been nice to also compare with a Nikon D810 and Nikon 105 f/2.8 Micro lens, I know, but our time is limited.
