Although Tamron seems to be getting ready to release more lenses, they look like they’re already having a tough time with their existing ones. Not long ago they released an advisory over compatibility between two of their F mount lenses and the Nikon D6. Now another advisory has surfaced for their new 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD lens for Sony E mount.

According to DPReview, a number of lenses were shipped from the factory without proper calibration of the internal floating elements, potentially resulting in a loss of image quality. And this is something that you can’t fix yourself with a firmware update and a dock. You’ll have to send it in to Tamron.

There have been rumours and leaks floating around about this lens for a while now, and the development announcement was way back in October, but Tamron has finally officially announced their new 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD lens for full-frame Sony E mount cameras. And it’s even less expensive than previously thought, listed at a mere $1,199.

The lens is expected to be available in the USA on May 14th, but with Tamron’s usual “we didn’t anticipate this high demand” combined with COVID-19 supply chain and manufacturing issues, we can probably expect delays and limited availability for a while.

Photos of the upcoming Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD lens for Sony E Mount leaked a couple of weeks ago. With promotional product photos out there in the wild, we knew it wouldn’t be long before there was an official announcement. Now it looks like we might see that announcement come at some point this week.

A tweet from Nokishita (who else?) suggests that you’ll be able to pre-order and reserve your new lens in Japan next week. A screenshot from French retailer, Photo Univers that seemed to jump the gun a little, also suggests it will be significantly less expensive than Sony’s FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM, with a price tag of only €1,499.

Tamron hasn’t announced its upcoming 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD lens yet, however product photographs of the new lens have leaked online. As is often the case these days, the images have been released by Nokishita by way of Twitter. There are no official specs yet, other than the obvious ones – the focal length range and maximum aperture, but here’s what the new lens looks like.
